Over 370,000 immigrants are on benefits

I have friends of various races and sexual preferences, and will not be friends with someone who thinks that there is something wrong with them, or that they are better than them due to those factors. Horses for courses as they say.

I have friends from all sorts of backgrounds, colours, creeds etc....I am of mixed race myself.....which even he agrees is kind of ironic (although I am not African mixed race)......I accept his ssues related to the way and the environment in which he grew up and as long as he keeps his opinion on that specific topic to himself it doesn't expressly impact on our friendship, We met in a conflict situation which engenders a slightly different emphasis on a friendship than some of my civilian ones....otherwise I might agree with you.

I can totally see how friendships formed in that manner don't follow conventional rules, so it's great that it works for you. :)

Work-related benefits were being claimed last year by more than 370,000 migrants who originally came to the UK to work, study or visit, the first research of its kind has shown.

The government matched benefit, border control and tax records from 2011.

A look at a sample of 9,000 claimants of certain nationalities found 2% were illegally claiming benefits.

Firstly, these figures mean nothing without a context. How are they defining 'benefits'? Which benefits specifically?

Secondly, 370,000 is an insignificantly small number as others have already pointed out. Difficult to get outraged about that.

Thirdly, 54% of these immigrants are now citizens, as others have already pointed out. Difficult to get outraged about that.

Fourthly, only 2% are claiming benefits illegally. This is another insignificantly small number. Difficult to get outraged about that.

Fifthly, 98% are claiming benefits legally. Difficult to get outraged about that.

Sixthly, we're not told how many of these people are/were working before/during their receipt of benefits. Nor are we told how long they were working for.

Finally, the article says:

Almost 17% of all British nationals receive these benefits compared with almost 7% of all those classed as non-UK nationals when they first arrived in the UK.

This tells us that the percentage of non-UK nationals claiming benefits is >50% lower than the percentage of UK nationals claiming benefits. Difficult to get outraged about that.

Why do they need benefits if they're all working already? someone has to drive the taxis and work in the take aways

Honestly, I don't even know why I bother posting in Dirty Dog threads. He's clearly got special needs of some sort. If I take your word on the fact that he's openly admitted to being an immigrant, it just makes me even more convinced that DD has issues with understanding what reality is.

Probably not a good idea to take gurdas's word, because I'm not an immigrant and have never said I am one. A very peculiar thing for him to say :)

Income support, carer's allowance, disability living allowance. Three examples of benefits you can receive while being fully employed. And that's before we even start to talk about tax credits.

I have, via email.

And I have had a email from kyleW.

Thanks.

I understand that being labelled a racist is not ideal, although in some cases (and without knowing what statements he was referring too) it can be difficult to separate a racist agenda from a purely political immigration one (as this thread illustrates) he probably feels a little angry right now so I would hope that you take that into consideration and that his suspension (if that is what it is) is not too long, as KyleW is generally a decent member even if he may of crossed the line in this case. :)

Send all the lazy good for nothing local benefit cheats home without a penny. Now that would be something. But wait, they’re not migrants so it’s not a problem.

Truly one of the worst arguments of all time.

"We already have loads of people claiming benefits so it doesn't matter we accept hundreds of thousands more."

These kinds of threads seriously need to stop; it’s not doing OCUK any favours as a business. OCUK forums has a long history of being labelled racist and so have the owners, weather correct or not I’m sure it’s a label that is unwanted and threads like these don’t help this cause. If you just Google OCUK, the drop down box top links are "OCUK racist"

Mods need to seriously get a grip of these forums, and remove clearly racist motivated threads. The "Pakistani Shop Owner" thread is still somehow going for example.

I’m all for freedom of speech, but threads clearly started to antagonise need to be dealt with.

I'd rather my tax go towards valid benefits for immigrants than illegal benefits for "natives".
