What direction would people like the FPS market to go?

More skill based. More like Quake, less like Battlefield.

+1. More user skill, less unlocks. I want to shoot stuff not level up. If I want to level I'll get an RPG thanks. Obviously you have to cater for the derps that "MUST HAZ SHINY SHINY" but really I don't want them in the game.

Also single player needs to go back about a decade pre-half life. Secrets and maze like maps. Unless they have a genuinely good storyline and copy pasting some US teenage war fantasy =/= good story.

Also for me FPS and MilSim are two separate genres. If you want slower paced and realism then why are you playing BF3 when you have a perfectly good Arma 2 sat there? Arma 3 soon. FPS is more broad I agree but generally I think of it as your Quakes and UTs

Seems most people don't want perks/unlocks/constant upgrades like COD/BF series offer recently.

Drove me mad that you had to level up to get the better weapons to have a chance at doing well. Just doesn't appeal to me.

CSS is where this is perfected. Anyone can buy the same gun from the very first time you play. Whether you can kill anyone with it is up to you..

Just a remake of the firts cod would be perfect. None the this perk, killstreak, levelling rubbish. No hit indicators, no gimmicky weapons like throwing knifes and rc cars

Something back to how CS was, the new one just looks completely rubbish.

Also HL DM I miss gauss jumping :(

i would grave for a modern quake/cs (hopefully go) , BF3 sucked ass like most of the modern 'quick hit' shooters of today.
THe original COd (4) was so good because it completely related back to the old style of gaming - the new ones have just added all the things wrong about modern fps's.

Bring back mohaa type ones, with a good single player story, set in ww2 and not focus too heavy on perks or what not, you get a few weapons you cant change too much like in the old mohaa type games and you do what you can with what your given.

This! Nothing like scavengine for enfield ammo and using that weapon over most of the campaign!

Remember that mission with the house in the night time, then the woodland road up to the coast? LOVED that mission!

PlanetSide. But better (fingers crossed for PS2).

No other MMO allows such diverse tactics / playstyles, demands co-operation, or gives you the real sense of achievement IMO.

500+ players fighting over 1 base, and your outfit secures the win for your faction via a great tactical generator drop? Legendary.

Im quite suprised at the amount of people who want more ww2 shooters. But tbh Medal Of Honour Allied Assault and cod1&2 were the most played sp and mp for me. Infact i must have finished the sp easily 10 times each.
Also loved return to castle wolfenstein must have finished that like 10 times aswell.

Anyway i would like more squad based realistic combat like swat 4 and ravenshield. Also i want to feel like im against humans i dont just mean better AI. But i want to see proper emotion in my enemies or allys. I want them to have fear or get angry or even get cocky and that will reflect in there actions. I also want a bullet to do the correct damage to a person i want very realistic bullet wounds and blood coming out my enemies.

Those asking for more realism and WW2 based games.. You do know how far from being fun WW2 was right? Would it be fun playing a Russian when only half the army has a gun and you need to wait for the guy in front of you to die so you can pick up his gun. Or being told to go over the top directly into machine gun fire with just a single shot rifle.
Personally I'll stick with the lack of realism given by the BF series thanks.

based on the opinions so far you should rephrase the question to "where do you want to see the popular fps market go", there's plenty of different types of shooter already available and even more in the mod community (especially on the pc) you wont see any changes in the call of duty camp so stop asking, if you want more quake then go play quake its still around last I checked.

A. Remove all stats other than win/loss
B. Complete release of Server code
C. Full SDK
D. Devs that are interested in their product
E. The end of stupid random bullet deviation
E. Total overhaul of the class system to a more player customisable approach *
F. Class limitation as an option
G. Map based game mode where the wining team decide on what to attack next (think of it like a risk map)
H. This one is hard to explain, BF/COD games imho have got the control system perfect (to an extent) the character movement needs to be smooth. The one thing that I absolutely hated about ARMA/ARMA2 was how clunky the damn thing felt. They felt like you had dirt on the bottom of your mouse (its hard to explain but it just felt very wrong, the sound didn't help either as it sounded like you were either a pantomime horse or you had 3 legs).

* for some time now I've wanted them to consider equipment as hindrance to the player. If you want to carry ammo then you slow down, if you want to equip an M60 then you cant run etc etc. Players should have a carrying capacity that slows them down as they carry more. Spec opps that want to adopt a speedy approach will need to be suitably ill equipped.

tbh i cant see any big developer doing anything.

if a truely original game comes out it will be from a small group .

i wish theyd listen to hard core fps gamers more when designing testing the games but often now the base is done in house . they arnt going to redesign a game on a beta testers reply because they already got the bricks down by then

actually cant see anything until either a big drop in sales which wont happen cause people will still buy once every year bf and cod cause they still hope for the next big thing.

so fps gaming will keep following the conosle crowd and probably end up merging into a mmo style game which is already happening.

my perfect fps ive ever played is still cod 1/uo

so something along these lines. great reg great weapons simple design and great maps.

Bigger guns, more scale, not fussed about setting really.

Anything but more "YOU ARE A SUPER SPECIAL OPS WARRIOR OF COMMANDING ULTRA MARINE NINJAS TO DESTROY THE EVIL <Generic Baddie> WHO WILL DESTROY THE <World / Galaxy / Local Co-op> UNLESS YOU STOP THEM".

Maybe a game where you get to systematically and increasingly gruesomely shoot every Z-list celebrity trapped in a Big-Brother-meets-Running-Man slaughterathon. Dibs on blasting Kim Kardashian in the face with a stapler.

I m suprsied no one mentioned Brothers in arms, that is one a the better WW2 First person shooters..Along with medal of honour, Allied assult is awsome :P

counter strike, quake, serious sam. bring them all back with a vengeance.
Edit: i Know counter strike and sam are back but still MORE.

Just started playing Metro 2033 which i've had sat around for a while since buying it in a Steam sale.

What a refreshing FPS! It's got everything I used to love about the genre. I'm only about 6-8 hours into it but seems to tick the boxes on what I want from an FPS.

- Slick visuals
- Great story
- Superb atmosphere (play late at night in the dark, those tunnels are spooky)
- Interesting characters

those last 3 are the most important to me, I'll take those any day over multiplayer and DX11 shinyness!

Its all about the story and that seems to have been lost recently as far as FPS is concerned.
