Virgin Internet... Actual Speeds

I'm in Bristol but on Virgin 50mb, until the 31st January.

I do get the 50mb download speed that I pay for, however, the service has been appalling over the past 2 months. I have regular issues with them such as connection drops, slow downs and general sluggishness. On several occasions I have been unable to play You Tube videos on even the lowest quality setting due to the internet performing so badly. I've called them to report this, and they have given me a new Superhub but it hasn't resolved the issues.

I'm not the only one who has had problems. A few days ago there was a near-nationwide service interruption. My broadband was down for around 6 hours, with some peoples being down for 12 hours or more.

Get the occasional drop. Near London.

Occasionaly drop is still better than the near 100% downtime my parents o2 broadband has back in the Midlands.

8mb sucks!

Indeed it does, but what sucks even more, is the fact that I can not get an unlimted plan, because the BT exchange i connect to is so messed up. In August last ear, they had to physically shut the exchange down for health and safety reasons, asbestos was found in the roofing. BT Openreach are a joke, I know this, as I deal with them ina professional basis as well as privately.

The moneymen behind BE Unlimited have created a start up, their business model is, if enough people in a certain area are willing to pay, they will provide 1gbdown/100mb up. Can not remember the name off hand. But looks promising.

Pay for 20, get around 19Mbps - 19.7Mbps usually.

EDIT:
Just did a SpeedTest:

Indeed, I pay for 20, and I get 20.
Always been this way.

I get my Virgin BB through cable, not the phone line. It never falls below 10Mb/s, unless i exceed my allowance which then means i get 75% throttle for 5 hours. This limit doesnt apply before 8am and after 9pm.

50mb here, wired i get full 50mb, on wireless i get more like 25-30mb, and that can change drastically day to day, it's been crawling the last 2 days on my wireless netbook. I've had wireless issues for months and months that have never been resolved.

I'm on VM 100megabit and download at somewhere between 13 - 14megabytes.

Always stable for me as apparently I'm the only one in my area that has it (As of checking 3 weeks ago)

Still have a weird problem though with speedtest.net never showing my download speed higher than 65megabit.

Most of the lower speed internet deals get traffic managed, so between 5 & 12 every weekday (which is when you will be using it if you work) it will be about 1mb (not the 10mb).

The only reason I got the 100mb was to avoid traffic management.

, most
3.5GB between 4pm-9pm even on 20mbit, and its getting doubled when the internet speeds do

Went from vm 50meg to crappy adsl upto 20 which is basically 6meg lol. The Vm 10 meg service is carp for downloads as they cap you down to 256k sec when you download about 1gb, so in the long run my 6meg works out faster when downloading a hd film.
The 50meg service doesn't get capped which was amazing.

I generally get the full speed from my 50meg connection. Have only had a couple hours downtime over two years too! :)
