£1000 to spend to remember my Grandad

Needs to be something you can possess for life? Some will argue memories are the only things that will last a lifetime.

No need to get al philosophical! It needs to be something that I can keep until the day I die.

I don't know really very hard question, firstly sorry to hear of your loss.

As to your question. I only have two keepsakes of those who have passed on, a couple of porcelain whiskey jars of my nains (as they remind me of how her flat was decorated when we went round ) and 2 model boats my next door neighbour made and gave to me as a kid ( his two hobbies where making wooden model boats and growing cacti ).

So I would suggest something your Grandad would have loved himself, maybe something assciated with a sport he supported or something related to his hobby or job possibly, or something that reminds you of how he liked to decorate his home.

Another way to think about it might be if he where still with us what would he buy you if he came into a windfall.

As I say my condolances

Thanks a lot. Personally I'm doing my best to think but can't think anything but a watch. I feel as if buying a guitar is a tad selfish tbh.

you could try and get a watch form the hear he was born?

I bought my dad a watch from 1956 for his 50th birthday a few years ago.

If you bought a watch for £1000 then it'd be something quite nice, if you think you can look after it then go for it.

I don't see why a guitar is selfish but a watch isn't.

But anyway, this would be easy for me. A used Omega Seamaster with a blue 'wave' pattern dial.

Well what kind of watch do you want? A sports one, chronograph, fashion, dress, pocket? Is name, function, size important to you?

Check out the 'What watch do you wear' thread for inspiration.

If you are Scottish, or have any Scots in you, I'd consider a kilt. Get a cracking one for a grand and it'll last you a lifetime if looked after.

I don't think a watch would last for life if you're going to wear it, far far too easy to lose or damage.

Personally I'd look at something more ornamental that stays in the house, perhaps a professional portrait of your granda and yourself/your dad from a photo?

This Seamaster:

Just make sure you don't get a quartz movement model and go for an automatic. Also, avoid the mid size unless you're a woman (I thnk the watch in the picture is mid size, but it's the nicest picture I could find :p).

One that compliments a suit. So dress / fashion I guess. Would really help if someone could suggest some brands for my criteria so I could look them up online.

I think the reason I find the guitar a tad selfish is because it's something I would buy with my own money. I'd never spend £1000 on a watch at my age / income.

Not a massive fan of the seasmaster tbh but thanks anyway.

I'd like a kilt, but only one of my grandfathers is Scottish even though I've got a very scottish name, so it wouldn't seem genuine, what with my accent and all. :p

I love Christopher Ward's stuff. I've been looking for a watch for ages, it needs to have a white face, gold accent and black leather strap and a relatively small face (I have small wrists). I can't find one anywhere, they are all either massive or have loads of crap all over the dial (I don't need seven different smaller watches on my watch).

This is what I want: http://www.christopherward.co.uk/men/dress/view-all-dress/c5gwk.html

Or, bit more expensive:

I know nothing about watches though. I pop into the jewellery section in Glasgow every month or so to see if I can find the watch I want but no luck yet. :(

If i was you i would proberly get a small tattoo to remember him by and end up banking the rest for now till i see somthing really nice to spend the rest on to remember him.
