Will the Asus P8Z68-V GEN3 Intel Z68 do audio over HDMI with the i7-2700k's built in GPU, or will I need an optical cable to hook up to my A/V receiver?

Am wondering the same thing. Hopeful I can use hd6970 for display and the optical output for audio.

I am not planning on using a graphics card for a while (as long as I can keep fobbing off my MMORPG friends). Using a 2nd cable for audio isn't really an issue, I am just a bit OCD and want to use "VIDEO 2" for the PC. That way my xbox is on "Video 1" PC is on "Video 2" and PS3, that to me is a glorified blue-ray and Netflix player on "BD".

I seem to remember reading in my manual that it is possible, but don't quote me on that! also i have no way of testing it

At the top of page 3-22 in the manual it shows options for SPDIF or HDMI audio.
