Got bored pretty quickly of using my "newly" acquired Cambridge audio am1 mk3 instead of the horrific Tv speakers and happened to see the Yamaha YHT 196 kit in a Richer Sounds leaflet. Looked online for reviews which seemed mostly favourable so took a trip in on Saturday for a look/listen.

Didn't have any that I could Demo in store for whatever reason, but offered it on sale or return and I had a listen to some Receivers at roundabout the same price as the Yamaha receiver and 5.1 setup. One of these was the Sony STRDH820 the other the £170ish Onkyo. Thought these both sounded pretty decent for the cash but if I was to buy one it would be the Sony, obviously it's hard to tell in shop what it'll sound like at home but at least both were tried in the same environment.

Decided to take the Yamaha package and see what it was like at home. Very pleased with it - sounds better than the receivers at the price of the whole Yamaha 5.1 package despite being a cut down version of one of their other models, that's with a pair of diamond 9.0's as the front two but hardly expensive all the same. Only has a passive sub but that's probably for the best as I'm in a flat, stuck it on some Granite with Polystyrene underneath for now to hopefully avoid annoying the neighbours.

I have since found out that my Sky box doesn't seem to play ball with DD over HDMI so need to get a couple of optical cables which isn't ideal but the xbox sounds great both in terms of Games and DVD's - I know it's not the same experience you'd get with a BR player but sounds much better all the same.

Overall it seems to be a cracking little setup for the money and one I would definately reccommend to anyone looking for a budget or first setup. I've no doubt that if I was to spend £7/800 I could put together a system that would blow the Yamaha away, but at say £400 I'm not sure that would be possible (buying new anyway)

glad you have got the bug now... its an expensive hobby! prepare to upgrade every few years :)

im on my 4th amp now and 3rd set of 5.1 speakers in 10 years.

my first 'proper' amp was a yammy after i had an all-in-1 sony system that was ok. the yammy was so much better than the basic sony one.

the DSP on yammies is very impressive. its odd how every amp has excelled at specific things. the yammy also had the best mp3 restoration tech out of the sony, yammy, denon and new onkyo. my old yammy will go in the study when its finished with my old mordaunt short 5.1 setup.

Well done on your purchase. You're excited about it, that's obvious. You've found out what us old hands at home cinema knew all along: You don't necessarily need HD Audio in a budget system. DD and DTS provide great sound. :D

I've been scooping up some of the incredible bargains in the last 12 months on second-hand AV receivers simply because they don't have HDMI and/or HD Audio. My last two were a beautiful Harmon Kardon receiver with 5.1 in for £40, and a Denon 1906 for similar money that has just gone in to a customer install to replace a broken Marantz. It accompanied a new-to-him projector and centre speaker. The job wouldn't have happened if he'd have to have bought new.

On the flip side those new AV amps such as the Sony 820 and the Onkyo 309 do have the convenience of HD Audio, so there's no worry about playing Blu-rays with the default audio selection.

The main thing though is to enjoy your system. :)

true but i do love hd audio. im not sure on the quality of speakers needed to tell the difference though.

the difference of surround sound over stereo is amazing. its so hard to watch movies at people's houses now if they dont have 5.1 systems.

Yeah I'm very pleased with it (for the money), did think about the digital aspect but in all honesty I didn't feel it was worth spending the extra for a feature that I dont currently use - also wasn't convinced that it would be a noticeable difference given the speakers I'm currently using (and spending anymore than what I did would have went down very, very badly with the other half).

May well upgrade when we move at the start /middle of next year - new house will be the ideal opportunity to cable before decorating etc.

I noticed this on on Richer Sounds the other day, looks like quite a bargain for £200. Considering the horrendous all-in-one kits from Samsung, LG etc are the same sort of price, it'd be completely foolish to get one of those over the Yamaha.

Stereo vs surround isn't the debate.

You seem to be confusing DD & DTS with plain stereo. DD & DTS are digital surround sound formats just as the HD-audio format DTS-MA and Dolby HD etc are surround formats.

im well aware of the difference. i tried to separate the 2 statements using 2 paragraphs.

what im saying is you need good speakers to tell the difference between dvd quality and HD quality. whereas any 5.1 system sounds better than stereo :)
