It's 1927, and suave, moustachioed matinee idol George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. He's dashing, he's just a little arrogant, and his romantic swashbucklers have women swooning. But silent movies are about to be washed away by new-fangled talkies. When studio boss Zimmer (John Goodman) offers him a chance to steal a march on his rivals in this exciting new format, Valentin rejects it out of hand in favour of his own epic silent project. Alas, this proves to be a flop. But as Valentin's life falls apart and his star wanes, the young actress whose career he nurtured, Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo), finds hers in the ascendant. A heartfelt love letter to Hollywood's silent era, writer/director Michel Hazanavicius's lovely film is even filmed in black and white without dialogue!

I think it looks amazing - that trailer is fantastic. A lot of talk about it as an Oscar contender too. Can't wait to see it in the cinema - 6th January.

I saw this last night - it was superb.

Such an interesting experience watching it as well, especially when they show (in the film) the crowd watching the film in silence, laughing and reacting to it - and then you realise you're doing just the same.

Well worth seeing if you can find it on a screen near you.

I wouldn't mind seeing it but can't help but feel it's a bit of a gimmick? Maybe they've heard everyone complain about 3D so thought they'd go back in time..

An interesting idea and an interesting film. But be careful because it's getting hyped like crazy at the moment, just don't go in with inflated expectations and you'll enjoy it. I thought it was very good althrough not spectacular as some people are making it out to be. For me it's a watch once thing and i doubt it will hold up to repeated viewings. I felt for this treatment it was a bit heavy and full on drama, i would have liked it to have been more of a comedy and generally be lighter in tone, that would have worked much better for a silient movie.

Nowadays the only silient movies i enjoy are Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd, i much prefer the early talkys like Singing in the Rain and It's a wonderful Life
