Rumours out that Kepler GK104 cards will be $299...

Apologies for the DP. This is to every one.

I know people are defending Nvidia right now. Funny, I didn't see any one defending AMD when they released the incredibly disappointing 6950 and 6970 !

LOL AMD release a couple of cards that are cheaper, yet slower than the 570 and 580 and get torn to bits, yet Nvidia can rumour a card that's pretty much going to be a 69 series Rad and every one is getting all excited !

Hahahahahaha !

I hope Kepler lives up to the rumours, after all, it benefits the enthusiast community - If it's a let down then things won't be good and AMD will have a monopoly (like they do now)

If Kepler high end is stunning then expect my 7970 in the MM ;)

It's not exciting at all though right now.

No one really cares about the low or medium range models. Sure, loads of people buy them, but it doesn't give you any status at all does it?

And that is what buying PC parts is mostly about. Satisfaction. A true enthusiast won't be satisfied with second best, which is exactly what the 104 sounds like it's going to be.

Yeah I'm aware of what it's capable of :)

I'm also aware of what it's achieved in games, and I'm under the impression that nothing done so far could not be achieved using a CPU and an SDK.

There have been loads of "could be cool" things over the past few years. Hydra was one. Sadly it all falls back to software support for it (drivers and so on) and like many other "could be cool" things (SLI, Crossfire, Quadfire, Quad SLI, Eyefinity, Surround, 3D ETC) the software support is hardly there or just completely non existent. This is something Nvidia should be realising. Stop putting money into "What if" items and concentrate on just getting the fastest GPUs out there.

Unless they are mainstream they won't catch on. And that brings us back to what is mainstream. Consoles. Until they catch up with what goes on in a PC none of the above can be mainstream.

No they can't be achieved using a CPU. Cloth, hair, and many-body simulations etc won't be fast enough on the CPU. That's why GPUs are used. I don't think you understand computation. Vectorization is the key to physics algorithms, and GPUs are great at it.

Tahiti has blatantly caught NVidia with their electronic pants round their ankles, hence midrange coming before top end (rumour mill)

As I recall there was a lot of discussion on the 6970/50 cards. People defending and the opposite...

I can't wait for "Hard evidence". As someone who is sitting on the fence for now I will be more, or less excited when GK104 is benched and I can see the benefits of upgrading.
Whilst we speculate on performance and price (this is what we do always) I prefer to use my noddle and see bench marks for anything new.
I will say though if the 660 will beat the 580 and match the 7970 at a price point of $299 then surely AMD will have to respond by lowering the price of the 7970 and thus making it a tantalising prospect for all of us fence sitters.
Time will tell and I for one am waiting with baited breath. I am very interested to see the 680 launch specs as this could be my route but on saying that I am not prepared to wait and wait.

Realistically if the card costs $299 then I would expect its performance to slot between the GTX570 and GTX580 given that GTX570's retails in excess of $300 at the moment. Remember it doesn't pay Nvidia to produce an HD7970 performance card for less money so assuming the pricing is correct ($299) your not going to get anywhere near 7970 performance at stock.

Yes, I'm sure the 10% average performance in games over GTX 580's 40nm GPU from an year ago had NVIDIA seriously worried.

You guys need to lay off the crack pipe now and then. NVIDIA would have to mess up royally to fail to top the HD 7970. Which, let's face it, isn't that much of a feat considering the huge jump in process technology.

In other news...

http://www.nordichardware.com/news/...cted-more-from-radeon-hd-7900q-exclusive.html

Even if this is hardly the optimum for NVIDIA they said they were positively surprised by AMD's launch - for its own account. A high up representative revealed that NVIDIA before the launch had a likely performance estimate of Radeon HD 7900, an estimate that it has been preparing to beat.
"Honestly, we expected more from our competitor’s new architecture."
After AMD's launch it is even more confident that Kepler and its own performance circuits will have no problem taking down Radeon HD 7900.
This doesn't sound impossible. Radeon HD 7970 may be the leader of the pack right now, but it didn't quite bring the performance upgrade we are accustomed to during generation shifts.

I fully expect Kepler to trounce the 7970 and 7950. When they launch we'll see.

I'd be extremely surprised if High end kepler didn't beat the HD7970 by a good margin considering rumours suggest high end kepler to launch in Q4 2012/Q1 2013... We may have rumours/leaks of AMD's HD8xxx series.

Also consider that if the GTX660 costs $300 its cheaper than the GTX570, why would nVidia price it that low if it's going to be up against the HD7950/70?
They are a business not a charity.

Think you got that a bit wrong there surely or I have misunderstood.

If Nvidia produce a 7970 performance card for less money then surely thats a good thing for the consumer and good for Nvidia as everyone would buy the Nvidia card if its cheaper to buy and same performance as 7970 ?

Status?? lol This sounds like a great card for those who want good performance for a decent price; or those who dont give a damn about "status" and epeen.

You'd have to have very little in the way of life achievements to need/want a high-end graphics card to assert social standing... And on the Internet at that!

I hear monkeys throw faces to achieve a similar result

In processing power or power requirement?! LOL
By the time they've stopped derping in their lab coats, the 8*** series AMD will almost be apon us, ready to wipe the floor with Nvidia "again"

This I agree with. Whilst I consider myself an enthusiast I dont feel the need to have the fastest. Satisfaction is what I am after and after reading the 7950 heaven thread then I could well be going the "Red" route with a 7950 or 2.

Time and money will make my mind up for me. Not the "my cockrel is bigger than yours" :D

It sounds like this is a mid range product, and the high end parts are coming after. Given the ~10-15% performance difference between a gtx580 and AMDs 7970, and current prices, I wouldn't be surprised to see a mid range part first.

A good performing mid range will sell far better than a high end part, so this is probably strategic. I won't mind waiting for the high end if it's a cracker.

I could buy a 580, overclock it to its limit stick a £600 price tag on it and say i've made a card that beats a 7970...will anyone be impressed?

This is about how they will beat it, not if they beat it.

Will the new nVidia cards support DX11.1 and PCIe3.0? None of the previews I found gave any relevant information.
