Can anyone that's read the book and watched the English version of the film tell me if it's worthwhile reading the first book? Or can I just skip straight to the 2nd book? Is there anything important missing from the film?

Yes.

The books are amazing.

The Swedish version (If you really enjoy the books get the extended versions) are much better then the American remakes too.

Do you think I could read the 2nd and 3rd then go back to the 1st? I really hate knowing everything that's going to happen, so it would probably take me ages to finish the 1st. Same thing happened with Game of thrones..

The trillogy is amazing. I would certainly suggest reading the book. But the swedish film did a pretty decent job of it. I had the same problem with game of thrones. Had to skip the book half way through. Must say they did a great job of keeping it true to the books though.

Personally I'd read the first book, it's not ~that long either.

If you want, get your hands on the extended cut of the Swedish version and go from that to the second book.

It's good, but it feels like a film that didn't need remaking (if that makes sense) and it's as good as the Swedish one.

The books are fantastic bledd, well worth a read.

Cant really comment on Girl with the Dragon tattoo as I haven't read the books, but with Game of Thrones I watched the show first and at first was a little lost as things aren't explain as they are in the book. I would recommend reading the books first though.

Well as the films aren't word for word accurate representations of the books, you'll get a lot more from reading the books. You'll get a much better insight into Lisbeth.

Read the first book for the love of all things holy! :p

Ok ok I guess I'll read the 1st book first.

Does anyone know if they will be releasing any more of the series? Because I read somewhere that there were manuscripts for about 10 books for the series. Too bad the guy died so young.

It's been rumoured, but I don't think there's been any substantial developments on it yet. But I guess there will be off the back of the success of the films. I'm not sure whether i'd be happy about that if they're a bit rough around the edges though.

god ... dont read a book if its based on a film or your going to be "mostly" disappointed ... read them "after" if you must .....

so much detail in books it usually means film is a letdown when something you expect to happen, doesnt

The books are very well written too, he was a really good writer. I'm not sure on my feelings towards more books.

this,
I have seen the Swedish film, even though its a good representation of the book, you get much more backgroud information from the book, which will help you in books 2 & 3
