New Xbox to have a 6670?

Never have, never will. Consumers don't want a graphics chip in a console that costs £300, they want the entire console to cost £300.

That's not true.

The X1800XT was a high end card for PCs at the end of 2005 , it was only released around oct/nov around about the same time the 360 was released.

If the next generation xbox isn't releasing until 2013 then fingers crossed the 6670 is just temporary for game devs, otherwise it'll be way out of date before it releases.

True however i've reconsidered my angle. When the 360 came out even the highest end PC graphics cards were being put through their paces by the highest end game. This time around however no game even touches the top end cards, they're totally overkill, they're also a lot more expensive than X1800s were when the 360 was released.

X1800s were about $500-$550 apparently at release which at today's prices would in fact get you a 7950/7970 :)

I think the one thing Microsoft and Sony need to aim for this time around is 1080p / 60 FPS, even if graphic quality takes a slight hit, games running at sub 720p these days is beyond a joke.

I think the evidence of the importance of this comes with emulators such as Dolphin which demonstrates how a game designed at 480p can look absolutely incredible at full HD.

The 6670 is a joke of a card

The fact they're even considering the 6670 tells you that cost + less power + less heat are the main criteria not graphics performance.

The Xbox is far too gimmicky now I find anyway, with their main demographic being families + kids (trying to steal competition from the Wii which outsold them by miles).

As said before, Even if the companies offered the power, the devs prefer to go with more on screen eye candy with no slow down. rather than going for solid 1080p/60fps.

Games will always been upscaled from below 720p, and we'll only get the odd game that is 720p/1080p.

There have been some fantastic looking games this gen, all below 1080p/720p and upscaled. And we love them. Expecting 1080p and 60fps as a minumum is silly and best left to PCs

maybe all where getting is xbox 360.5 then @180 pounds.

its a joke there considering a 6670 because tablets aint far away from same graphical IQ as a xbox 360 yet doing it at 720p res now.

heres a thought, if the new xbox does use a 6670, How much u willing to bet that the tablets thatc ome out in 2-3 years time would match the new xbox's eye candy?

Current tablet devices such as the ipad2 Already produce graphics that are not that far off xbox 360 graphics. So if the tablets catch up on consoles then that will spell BIG trouble with consoles IMO as Ipads on its own will outsell any console and games costing no more then a tenner to play on tablet devices!

i say the question is, how will Tablets affect console gaming.

Price doesnt matter. look how many ipads have been sold.

Qaud core tablets are going to be the norm this year and 1gb ram is pretty standard. I think Tablets will trouble consoles

Price does matter. See Playstation 3 when it came out. High price hurt it.

Apple has a unique group of people that will pay big £ for their hardware. There will be hardcore gamers who do that for teh consoles, but I think generally the prices should not be at the level the PS3 was when it came out.

what the hell, how is the 6670 a joke?

consoles don't need massively fast hardware to get great results, just look at some of the current generation of games for crying out loud and you'll see that, some stand out amongst the crowd but that is entirely down to the developers doing a better job that their competition. surely giving them six times the power on a graphics processor is going to give them a lot more to work with, plus the processor is another important factor that is unknown at this time.

personally speaking think it sounds promising, assuming it has more memory, which is a logical assumption to make, would much rather have a console that actually works and doesn't break all the time rather than have one that is really really fast for like two weeks, before it starts seeping smoke out of the vents.

also they have to actually be able to sell the things as well, putting a super powerful, expensive graphics processor in is just going to drive costs right up and they'll essentially shoot themselves in the foot, pricing themselves out of the market. the graphics processor is probably about equal to that shipping with the new Trinity processors, don't understand why they don't just throw one of them in their and be done with it. this is the best way to do things, start actually taking some time and effort to make good software instead of continually throwing ever more powerful hardware at the problem, attempting to mask the fact the software is utter crap, would be nice if they did that in the PC gaming market as well but that isn't going to happen...! :(

Show me a tablet that is at least 40inch?

yup, thought so.

Show me a tablet that has:

control pads
dedicated online system (including invites/messaging/friends lists etc)
games catalogue as good as the consoles
blu-ray/DVD player
splitscreen multiplayer

You could argue that tablets/smartphones may take a large bite out of the dedicated handheld market in the next gen but saying they'll cause big trouble to the actual consoles is ridiculous.

UNfortunately this thread is full of people posting from the perspective of a PC gaming rig rather than having any understanding of how dedicated devices work.

I'll spell it out

If the next console has an equivalent GPU to a 6670 in it, the games will look a lot nicer than a PC running a 6670 and it will also be much more capable.

I could try dumb it down more i suppose...

hmm...

control pads - you can alreadyc onnect a xbox 360pad on the asus transformer prime
dedicated online system ( including invites/messaging/friends lists etc) - All software related which even i can program and develope(I am a professional Android developer)
games catalogue as good as the consoles - Game catalgoue is huge. go check out the android market place and the apple store
blu-ray/DVD player -no need when you buy and download the games digitaly
splitscreen multiplayer - easily possible. all up to the developer to implement it

O and let me toss this in your face.

The Wii-U is practically tablet console device :)

But the 6670 is not even a mid/high end GPU from last gen. by the time these new consoles come out(2013) the 6670 could quite possibly be already 2 generations old AND not even a midrange GPU in the generation it was first released two gens ago!

Toss in the fact that a typical laptop would most likely have a faster onboard GPU makes it even more of a joke.

Not only are pc's leaving consoles left to dry, but tablets are catching up too

You keep mentioning developers. And I'm glad you do. I cant see mainstream Devs supporting gaming on Tablets regardless of what it has under the hood.

Yeah we'll see gimmicky stuff, emulated stuff. But gaming support to the same standard as a console? Not a chance hell.

So the GPU under the hood, not really all that important, and probably half the reason they dont bother with anything overly powerful.

Oh and just to "throw this in your face" Could you imagine the battery drain on a tablet running a high spec GPU.
Oh I can play Crysis 5 on my tablet!!! :D:D For all of 5 minutes before I have to plug it in.

Oh and What does when a graphics card was released have to do with anything? or how far behind it is?

1. No doubt this is just a temporary GPU opening the console up for early development

2. Even if its not, it wont be a 6670 in the console. It will be a GPU based on the 6670.

It could be anything clock and vram wise. And considering how good current games look, regardless of the age of the 6670 We'll still see games looking better than we do now, and games we have now look fantastic on the most. Even if we saw GPUs with just double the capability of what we have now.

Bioshock Infinite, Mass effect 3. Given double the GPU headroom!?!?

Yes please.

Triple, quadruple, etc, etc??

Very Yes please
