So the seagate momentus XT drives seems to come in around £100 for 500GB and only a little more for £750. Obviously SSDs are more expensive, has anybody got any performance specs or such from the XT drives, id like a decent speed boost compared to my current 500GB drive which is pretty slow.

I have a 128GB ssd in my MBP and was thinking of switching, from most the reviews I have read it seems that it's not much faster then just a standard 7200 and no where close to the SSD so I am sticking with a SSD for now.

Thanks, i was hoping it was close to SSD performance :( Look like i will be getting a 256GB SSD one way or another, my wallet cannot escape the impending doom.

Housemate has the XT and doesn't rate it. I have a 120gb SSD and a second drive for storage and its fantastic.

You have one of the DVD Drive storage replacement things? or external drive?

Thats what I was going to do get a Optibay caddy and have a primary 128 ssd and then a second HDD but optibay caddys are very expensive and the clone i got from ebay was a piece of junk that was a terrible fit so i gave up.I Just use a external HDD now. There is another caddy that is like a piece of blue plastic I can't remember the name but it's meant to be good and cheap but not available in the UK.

I was very tempted by the ones there too, but since you say they are terrible i may not bother, but i could quite easily dremel it to fit. Not quite MBP quality though...

The one i got only had 2 screw holes to connect it and not the 3rd hole that you get with the Optibay so it would have vibrated also i didnt get as far as putting the backplate back on but it seemed as if it was too thick and wouldn't have gone back together.

Lol, obviously a very cheap imitation product. Only issue i have with getting an SSD is i currently have about 190GB of files so even a 256GB would be close to full even when i start!

You can notice a slight difference, I have one in my 2010 MBP, but it isn't huge. You still get all of the downsides of a regular mechanical HDD.. seek times.. mainly.

Im looking for a big difference really. Think i will take my v100 256 GB out of my Main rig and Whack that in my MBP. Then buy an M4 or samsung drive for my main rig.
