XBox successor to stop used games from being played

When you consider Gears 3 rarely has 20k online how few the others in the top 20 must have, makes the online codes all but worthless when nearly 1 million copies of Gears where pirated.

Stopping the use of used games will just encourage piracy IMO.
Games are just too expensive for people to be buying 5 or 10 a year at £40.
If people can trade a game in and get a new game for £20 then they'll buy more games.

I honestly don't see what the problem is with all this pre-order bonus they use now. It encourages people to buy the game new in the first place. What they should do it give away pre-order bonuses that you can only get by pre-ordering.

I don't think that statement is true, or at least we're missing the full facts (i.e. the lack of sales figures for online activations). DLC (as used in Gears) is a lot more comment place, but in that top 20 games only EA really push an online code for multiplayer (appreciate there are single player only games in there too). Somewhere at retail that online pass in EA games could be reducing or helping consumers choose new copies instead. Equally some might be buying online codes on s/h copies. I think generally the sellers of secondhand games just ignore DLC or online activations rather than reducing their prices - but that doesn't mean the system isn't a success for that publisher. Also would the 1 million copies have been pirated anyway?

If they are going to make such a change it needs to be done on the software side, not the hardware side.

So what will it be? Serials? Or will they change the whole model of play i.e. you only get restricted access to a disc until you pay for the content online.

Can't see this hapening unless they made it v cheap...

Reason being is obviously for businesses all over the world who sell used games, such as on ebay or small time shops then you have the bigger ones like game, gamestation, blockbuster etc...

Secondly a lot of people buy used games as it's much more cost effective then buying brand new and in the day and age we live in most of us need to watch what we spend to a certain degree.

Also to add they have the online code such as on bf3 etc where you need a code to play online or you need to buy another one, fail to see why not just keep this in that case?

Because they know full well that the vast majority of buyers/players never actually play online. Just the same as they know the majority of players never complete a single player game past 6 hours. They have all this data at their disposal these days.

They want to mop up all the players not playing online.

Who can blame them everyone is trying to maximise their revenue. The online code just covers a small number of games sold.

I dont see this happening. Not every game console owner has the internet and renting companies would loose customers or close down.

Why wouldn't Microsoft plan to have its own Steam-like service on the next generation, as well as boxed copies so you could just buy a new release and DL straight to your account as an option.

Hassle? How are they hassle?

Surely PC games are considerably more hassle.

It's not that PC games are more hassle than console games, it's that they are pretty much on par, and I don't want to have to run/power/constantly update two different systems.

I used to enjoy having a PC and consoles because they had different jobs. Now that consoles have essentially been turned into PCs, then there is no real niche for the console to fill for me anymore.

What I used to enjoy about consoles is that I could power it up, put the game in, and start playing immediately. The problem is now I boot up my PS3 and then the PS3 software needs updating, I put a PS3 game in and the game needs updating because I haven't played that particular game in a while.

At least on my PC Steam will keep my games up to date, and I don't really notice the O/S updates because they can just wait until I next turn off my PC. Also with the PC I can browse while something updates, with the PS3 I have to go and do something else (like sit at the PC and browse) or stare at the progress bar.

Also it used to be that there were more unique console games that you couldn't get hold of on PC, and vice versa. Nowadays you pretty much play the same games on PC as you do on a console.

I think from the launch of the PS1 up until the Xbox 360 came out was the golden age for consoles really. It's all been downhill from there in my opinion.

That's not to say I haven't had fun with my current consoles (got 100+ games for my PS3 at the moment), but I don't think they're going to have the same retro or nostalgia value as the older consoles like SNES, Megadrive, PS1, Dreamcast etc. have.

In a few years once the next generation of consoles are up and running most of the servers and support for the PS3/360 will probably be turned off and they'll just be completely useless pieces of electronics.

I doubt this is true. It almost certainly violates the doctrine of first sale in the US, and whatever the equivalent is here.

Nobody would be stopping you from selling it on to someone else it just wouldn't work unless they pay a fee direct to the publisher for the game like an online pass. If it was sold in the first place with that understanding then what exactly is the problem.

Let just assume for the minute that this rumour is true. Microsoft are going to remove the ability for you to sell your games and to share with your mates.

What happens if Sony don't follow suit? Would that affect which console you chose next time around?

Wasn't this already said to be 100% speculation.

i imagine that the devs/Microsoft make a fortune off the online passes that have started to show there heads, i don't think they need to do anything else with the used game market.

If they did this then there'd only be a few games i'd buy on release. The rest i'd wait til they dropped in price so publishers would lose money anyway. I suspect this would be the case for the vast majority of gamers.

Online passes only make them money on multiplayer games if people want to play the multiplayer. Plenty of single player games get sold used and they never see another penny from them.

But puts places like GAME and GameStation especially out of business basically.

Those places are already going out of business.

I imagine this is speculation but I expect all consoles to do this anyway. It obviously works successfully on steam, can't see it being any different on consoles.

I'd love to see a Steam-esque system on consoles. Would much prefer it to physical media, I very rarely trade in any games and can't remember the last time I bought used.

weren't one of the shop in UK or USA said they would be willing to share on the profits of preowned if they removed the one time codes for new titles.
