Five years later.... Is it any good?

I used windows 7 on my laptop, and xp on my office pc. Windows 7 is certainly several magnitudes better than XP, it's got loads of features, is much slicker and better for media centre thingys. Saying that, I used XP all day, when I'm in the office anyway, and I haven't had a bsod for absolutely years, maybe you had faulty hardware or something last time?

I've had more problems with Lion recently than I have ever had with Windows 7, echoing what people have already said but it is MS best OS so far.

Never had any problems since Windows 98, all crashes were either caused by faulty hardware or messed up system. Also Windows 7 is just simply amazing, so easy to use with 10s of different apps or windows open.

I have used various version of windows over the years and have had very little problems, as said in other posts blue screens/crashes etc. are mostly due to crappy drives and crappy 3rd party software.

Windows 7 is by far the best and most stable OS Microsoft have released.

My last rig that I built was an athlon xp 1700 and geforce 4. Going back a bit now i know. I had to replace xp with linux then but that was only ok for general pc usage and not for what i needed. Switched to leopard soon after that.
Im looking to build a sandy bridge rig now, a rig that will last me at least 5 years minimum.

much better than xp ever was in my experience, you just have to be a bit more pro-active with windows than osx - ie. get a decent virus program on it, and keep checking for malware and spyware and you should be set. Microsofts own free programs are actually pretty good now for keeping your system free of nasties...

BTW if I do get any problems it's with games and their drm...just be aware of that

I've never had problems with NT, 2000, XP or W7.

However I don't game, I don't overclock and I don't have any strange and wonderful hardware. For example, my PC uses the graphics built-in to the mobo as they are perfectly adequate for what I do.

Actually I did have a problem with a corrupt registry at one point, when I was running W7 in a virtual machine on XP. I suspect it was caused by a power cut - I live in the country and when the wind blow the trees often come down. Sometimes the take the power lines with them.
