BT Vision box - first impressions - it's crap.

I got BT Vision a few months ago and have, right from the start, been frustrated by the terrible box. I've been using pvrs for many years, my favourite manufacture is Humax, fwiw.

BT box good points:

The padding where it will pad programmes that start one after the other on the same channel - the box will pad either side of both programs.

Maybe access to iplayer/4od etc (maybe - it's not that good a feature)

BT box bad points: - here goes:

Terrible remote reception - point the remote at anything other than the box and it might work - point it directly at the box, and it wont.

Doesn't work well with aftermarket/replacement remotes - I have a Logitech Harmony One remote that has, up until now, worked with every single item I have programmed it to. Not with this box though.

Sluggish remote response - when fast-fowarding through adverts and pressing play to resume, a lottery ensues as to the replay point. It might be 12 seconds after the point when you press play, or 1 minute before you pressed play.

Bad reception? I constantly get messages about poor/low freeview signal via this box, however, the two other pvrs (both dual tuner) and dtv never have any problems with signal - they all report a signal strength and quality of 10/10.

Menu. Who designed the menu? Imagine a list of 10 things. On every other single item I have ever owned, if I'm at the top menu item and I want the bottom menu item, I simply press the 'up' button to scroll from the top directly to the bottom. It's not rocket science, surely? Not on this box. To get to the bottom you have to press 'down' several times - this is made all the more difficult due to the FACT that this box is terrible with remote reception. This is the worst thing about the menu system, but the rest is equally unintuitive. Getting into menu options is incredibly frustrating.

Constant hanging - I'm finding that this box needs more resets than most others I have owned - kind of interrupts your viewing, no?

Sound - the sound stage constantly distorts, calling for a rewind to reset the sound. The box is connected via SP/Dif to my DSPAX640SETII amp that works fine with all the other connected equipment.

Apart from that, it's great. Not. Philips/Pace suck hairy balls.

What would be a good pvr (poss HD) - Humax?:D:D

^^^

Yes - it's absolutely terrible.

I only got the box because it's cost me £4 x 12 months = £48, but the box is not worth 48p. It truly is that bad. Get a decent pvr (like anything other than a BTVision box). The only redeeming feature was direct access to iplay/4od etc, but that's now by the by. I've just finished burning my box and I still have 7 months left to pay for the subscription. It was fun seeing/hearing the capacitors blow up thou, and I've a 160gb hdd out of it  The box was made by Philips/Pace - the shytest people known to electronics :)

HTH :):)

mines OK tbh. only problem we have is its internal hdd could have been bigger.
its a cracking freebee and does us proud. we certainly don't have the ptroblems you do.

Is this your first pvr or have you owned others? Do you not find the box sluggish on wake up, especially regarding the remote control issues? Do you have your box connected via S/PDIF to an external amp, or to the tv?

serrions questions :)

Baws !! Virgin media should merge with BT as they have a proper fibre network unlike half a job BT. FTTC but copper wire to the home lol !!

Lol at you for thinking virgin have a proper "fibre" network. It's the same concept as BTs in the fact that the end run is coax.

IMO the only decent subscribtion based PVR is Sky, they are so far ahead in their technology its embarrasing.

I've not once lived in a cable area, 6 different houses so far and none have had cable. I'd like me some cable internet!

Just got Sky before Xmas finding it much better than I thought I would. :)

Humax freesat here, it's great.

BBC iPlayer and ITV player built in, decent selection of channels and really reliable. If Sky wasn't so expensive I'd go back to them but there you go..
