WII U to little to late?

I think the gamecube suffered. But the Nintendo 64 didn't by any means. Sales were good as far as I'm aware

32 million ish I believe for the N64

21 million for the Gamecube...

Sadly the Gamecube didn't do so well but it did have some fantastic games. What people seem to forget at regardless of their thoughts on Wii it has sold 95 Million Consoles...that is phenomenal in todays market.

Nintendo seem to have successfully merged what made the Wii so popular but recognise what their 'hardcore' market want from a console. The E3 video gave a taste of the type of games they want to bring the console which is fine by me.

True judgement can't be passed until their E3 presentation for the final reveal where we will see the Launch Date, Line Up, Price etc.

Will be an interesting year for Nintendo.

Hardly bad sales really. Plus Nintendo profited from them unlike Sony + MS seem to struggle with.

If they run this along with a family friendly console, I.E the wii. Then they will have every base covered. Nintendo are smart, longest running console firm on the market are they not?

They have built a succesful name for themselves, if they can break into the 'gamer' market again they can only get better.

I am not yet tempted by one, shall wait and see reviews on the next Zelda. But I am very, very interested. Lets hope they nail the tech, online market, 3rd party support.

It looks good, and their target market is not on here. But they know their targets and they strive for them. I mean we have about 7 of their consoles in this house.

Well they have that section nailed down...

Masterstroke in my opinion to allow you to use you're Wii controllers on the new system, saves existing customers a good bit of cash, Motion Plus will be necessary now I suspect however as it does work very well.

It's all about how they mix the Casual/Hardcore, if they can get a fine balance then they will have yet another massive success on their hands.

I am excited about it but again remain cautious, E3 is a major conference for them now, they simply need to get this launch correct.

Although they should have Holiday 2012 all to themselves, so if they have the units they will be off to a good start.

I think this touch pad thats coming to the new nintendo opens up some exciting capabilities. As well as some interesting ones for the none gaming crowd.

Imagine zelda with a map on the touch screen, where a simple tap marks your next objective. Or QTE events that we all hate, they could have an interesting style lights out mini game implimented.

For the older crowd, Word searches, Find the object, Books like kindle, that interact with the screen in front of you.

There's so much that can be done, depending on if the touch is pressure sensitive, it could take interaction to another level in the way kinectimals works. You stroke the pad, etc. OR, we all know how the crazy Jap like their Dating Sim\Visual Novels. Imagine what touching the screen could bring to those games.... :o

i dont know, something tells me they arent going to have that runaway success this time around with the wiiU. being a new gimmick aimed at people who didnt normally game - thats why the wii sold, that and the promise of revolutionary game play forr those of us who already did game and owned other consoles.

This is what I've been saying.

The Wii was such a huge success because it was a new innovation in gaming, it was social, fun and accessible to all age ranges. It was a top sell out at Xmas twice, not just as something for the kids, but because many adults wanted one as well.

While the Wii has a huge player base, I'd imagine there are few that bought many games for it, or still play it now. My parents bought one and it never gets used anymore.

The other issue is that those who still have a passing interest in it, may have also realised that the Kinect and Move are actually more fun for a lot of these games now. I had my 81 year old Grandad playing Kinect Sports at Xmas, he wouldn't have been able to do the Wii with it's controller and buttons to press.

I just can't see the people who bought the Wii and never really use it wanting to buy the new console.

The ship has sailed, they need something else that is going to convince people to buy it.

In order to really attract the more traditional gamer to the console, they need AAA exclusives, which I don't think they are going to be able to secure, especially when it's likely that after the Wii-U launches, the next generation of other manufacturers consoles will likely be announced. So it basically comes down to another console featuring Nintendo's own AAA titles, another Mario, Mario Kart and Zelda game, whether they can actually have these ready for launch though is a big ask.

Like Zelda on the 3DS is, and to be honest it was a joy to play on the 3DS. No need to pause the game to change weapons, to look at the map.

Nintendo know what there doing, and even if it doesn't work for the Western world they will sell in Japan. I hope it works out, as I am interested in it

Yep...Battlefield 3 was shown during the promo video for the software at E3 to showcase the types of games that would be coming to console.

They will get a lot more of the cross platform titles now :)

This is interesting and I hope that is the case.

You've got people in this thread saying the console isn't aimed at them. Why, do they not play games?

With BF/COD types which can be had on the PS/Xbox. Mario, Zelda et al. Sounds like a winner to me. And hopefully Nintendo won't charge to play online :)

The thing is...why will peeople buy a new console to play the same Battlefield/Cod that they're already playing? They won't.

1. All their friends will be on the current console
2. What controller will they play it with? The dinner tray? I don't think so.
3. I'd be amazed if the online system is anywhere near as capable as PSN/XBL.

I think the Wii-U will do quite well, though i don't think it'll come anywhere near the sales of the Wii. I do honestly think that a large number of consumers are 'over' the Wii as a console. It was a great concept but the lack of software support after the first year was just shocking. Only now is the library becoming interesting again after what, two years of barely any titles?

I'll probably get one eventually, but i'll be waiting until there's plenty of games, not jumping in at the very beginning like i did with the Wii.

ffs only 768mb of ram :(

its dirt cheap why not shove 4gigs in there and give devs some wiggle room

Console ram is not the same as PC ram. Look at what consoles can currently do with 512mb shared between the CPU and the GPU. Console ram is generally faster and more expensive than PC ram also.

3DS is currently up to 15 million world wide and topping the charts in Japan every week since Mario launched.

It is indeed selling very well now but at significant loss for Nintendo. It's outsold the original DS which nobody expected to happen but the DS was making them money. The 3DS is costing them a small fortune.

Not only are they making a loss on the hardware (something that historically Nintendo never do) but because of the price drop it's cannibalised the DS hardware sales where they were printing money. So now they have an old platform that makes them money seeing vastly diminished sales and a new platform with great sales that's costing them a small fortune.

As I said earlier, they have wiped out about 3billion dollars in the last couple of years. The shareholders are cacking themselves, stock price is down dramatically from the date of the 3DS launch and Iwata is under incredible pressure to make the 3DS profitable and make the WiiU a success. That's part of the reason why they are reportedly looking at a new name for the console. They released the 3DS and Joe Public thought it was just another DS rather than a brand new model. They feel that if they launched the new home console as the WiiU the same confusion will happen.

As I've said before, I have no doubt that Nintendo can succeed, they have 1st party brands that Sony and Microsoft would kill for. They are however not infallible, do make mistakes and there are never any guarantees about how the next generation will unfold.

At the end of the last generation the PS2 was by far and away "the winner" it had more titles and more units sold than its competition. Nintendo and Microsofts offerings didn't get mindshare for various reasons and Sony made a fortune on the back of it.

Then they got arrogant told people to get 2 jobs for a PS3 that even now is only just really coming under £200 (I know you could get them for £165 before Christmas however). Sony bet the bank quite literally that the PS2 fanbase would pay whatever it took to be part of the next generation with Sony and they were flat out wrong. Their online was terrible compared to the 360 and the entry point was far too high.

Nintendo did something similar with the 3DS at its launch. They got arrogant on the back of the DS's incredible success and released hardware that was very expensive for what it was and no particularly big hit games. They even had the temerity to raise the price of the 3DS from their original target because they thought they could get away with it. Lo and behold within 5 months of its launch they have had to have a massive price drop and release 3 key franchises to get the system moving at enormous cost to them.

Everyone makes mistakes, and there is never any guarantee that one platform will be the one to play on next time out. If the rumours are true (and I'm sure they are not) that Microsoft will implement a "no used game" policy on the nextbox that could spell disaster for them if Sony/Nintendo don't do the same. Why would you buy a Nextbox for multiplat games if you can't sell them if you can on another platform?

It's all fascinating and all that really matters is that fierce competition is best for gamers even if you don't own every platform because it forces the others to add and innovate to get marketshare.

Just don't expect the next generation to follow the same pattern as this one, I don't think that's been true of any generation.
