WD release NEW **WDTV LIVE PLAYER**

True but I have tried two headphones and both have the same problem. They both also play both channels when watching a standard TV channel/DVD player when plugged into the TV too :(

For those asking how I set up my media library with content info here's how I did it. Note - I'm using Network Shares so if you're using an external hard-drive it will be different. Using a NAS should be the same however. Edit - I'm now not sure if you can scrape content info when using a NAS. I don't own one so I can't test it.

Firstly you need to to ensure that the folder(s) on your PC are shared with everyone on the network and have read/write access. (The WDTV SMP needs write access to create the meta/xml files)

Firstly navigate to the "System" menu within Setup -

You will see a "Media Library" option. Select that and you will see where we can add our network shares/folders -

Navigate to the PC/NAS where the media is stored. In my case it's on my main PC in my home office "Griff" -

Next you will see a list of folders you've chosen to share across the network. In this case I want to select "Vids" -

It's then just a case of following the prompt on screen -

You should receive confirmation that the folder has been added to the media library correctly -

Repeat this process for any other media folders you want to add to the media library, E.G music and photographs. Once added it should look like this -

The "scan shedule" refers to how often the SMP will scan these folders for new media. You can always force it to rescan the folders at any point so don't pay too much attention to this setting.

Once back in the system menu you can select how the SMP scrapes the content information. I choose manual for a couple of reasons. Primarily I want to ensure it assigns the correct information to each film. TV show, album etc and secondly when set to auto it can takes hours if you have a very large media library.

Part 2 - Viewing the media library, adding content info coming up next

Now you've setup the media library it now a case of viewing it. Go back to the main home screen and select Videos. Use the red button to bring up the list of sources -

Select the media library we've just created. At this point it may take some time for the SMP to collate all of the media and you should see "compiling media library" displayed at the top of the screen.

Once compiled you can just click on Videos and it will take you into the media library and display all of your videos. NOTE - You may have to use the yellow button to change the display mode. Keep pressing it until your screen is laid as seen below -

At this point you may or may not see the artwork depending on whether you selected "Auto" or "Manual" in the content menu I covered earlier. If you selected "Auto" then go through your collection and ensure the artwork matches the correct film or TV show. If it doesn't it's easy to correct.

Assuming you have chose to add the content info manually here's how simple it is -

025.jpg

As you can see there's no artwork, background or info and the file names are displayed in their original format. Simply select the first file displayed and press "options" on the remote. A menu will appear -

026.jpg

Press "Get Content Info" and the SMP will use the filename and attempt to retrieve the info. It will then ask you ton confirm the name of the film or TV show -

027.jpg

Once you confirm it's correct it will then display the film (or episode info in the case of TV shows) -

028.jpg

If correct simply press ok and that file is done. Move onto the next in turn until all episodes are done -

5febd8a1.jpg

Once done you should have the artwork cover, background image(s) and film/episode synopsis -

(The Toy story background looks corrupt by the presence of "blocks" but it was actually changing the background picture for another at the exact moment I took the photo)

Obviously some films share the same name but were produced in different years. If this happens the SMP should display a choice of selections. Just match the correct selection with the correct film.

This has been a pretty much simplified guide so forgive me if I've missed anything out.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

No problem guys. It's very a very simplified guide so if some aspect doesn't work just let me know and I'll try and help.

Thanks for doing this guide Griff. I'll be giving this a go tonight when everyone has buggered off to bed.

Would it be best to place each movie within it's own folder rather than grouping all video's under a single "Movie" folder? Would all the generated metadata and artwork be placed in the same folder as the movie?

Edit: Answered my own question. The xml file, metathumb file and backdrops folder are created in the same location as the movie. Creating a folder for each movie makes for a tidier "Movies" folder.

Hi Mutt,

As you've discovered for yourself it's a lot neater and easier to manage with each film/TV series having it's own folder. Particularly in the case of TV shows where there's multiple series and episodes for which the SMP creates individual XML/Meta files.

Grr, It's saying the dir. is read only. It has a grey tick that will not go (XP home). Apparently this is a well know issue. I tried to remove it but had no luck :(

thanks to Griff, I need to make some winter cleaning on my movies :)
sort everything out :)

and because of that, I bought yet another 2TB drive ;D

Can i just confirm that all the lovely media scraping and metadata content people have been talking about configuring is available in the WD TV Live advertised in the 1st post, and not just the Hub version that was also released a while ago? If so i'm going to get one as an upgrade to my existing one. Main thing i want from the current one is metadata and Netflix.

Thanks!

Correct.

Decided to follow Griff's guide and get this set up properly today, but I must be doing something wrong. When I go into System - setup - media library, I only have options of On, Off or Clear Library - no matter which I select it does not bring up the option to add network shares/folders, it just reverts back to the system setup menu :(

What am I missing ?
