Twitter "blackout" on the 28th by it's users in protest against Twitter censoring tweets...

The 'Old World' is catching up....that is the problem.

I think it's more like they're scared to death of the power shift to the people and thus are blindly thrashing around to keep hold of the old ways of managing flows of information, power and in the case of the corporations their business models.

No doubt, however who do you really think is going to win? Especially as those very Corporations you refer to are the Social Networks themselves......don't be so naive as to think that Google, Facebook and Twitter and companies like them are not complicit in trading their influence for power.....

Google et al (probably not Facebook though) are new media and whilst I'm not going to be naive and suggest they don't desire power but they do get their revenue and popularity from people using them to share information.

Whereas the old media sells us items that they don't want us to share. Governments in the past have in effect "sold" us information and still try to manipulate (spin) the information they feed us via traditional channels.

Social media and the blogosphere removes the above. It makes us content creators, content sharers, information sharers and the old guard don't like this. They don't like it one bit.

What you don't seem to get is that it is just another form of control....this is nothing new, The 'New Guard' will become the 'Old Guard' soon enough...and if you think that Government and NGOs don't utilise the Social media to control and 'sell' information then you are very naive.

If anything the Internet has made it easier for everyone....including those with an agenda to control the ideas and thoughts of masses of people.......it can be used to oppress, subjugate and brainwash just as easily as it can be used to freely express yourself. In fact it is more insidious because those that control the medium, control the information that you think is free.....given enough time (the catch up you were referring to) the 'Old Guard' will have more control over you and your information not less and I wouldn't worry too much about minor censorship in countries that have far bigger human rights issues, I would be worrying about what those who seek to control the media networks and infrastructure you are using to transmit every random thought in your head are eventually going to do with that information.

Idealism doesn't last.

They already censor stuff and have done since day 1.

This change just means that if someone tweets about some hardcore nazi stuff, instead of that tweet being censored worldwide, it's now only censored in Germany (and maybe France) etc etc.

That means they are actually going to be censoring stuff less... people are stupid :p
