What does everyone think of current gpu prices

So far The new amd pricing is too high for a lot of people and people will just not bother upgrading. You can't sell products in a market place that does not exist.

their products are carefully priced to sell for maximum profit....

you sell no cards at all (no offence) they sell millions they will (probably) know exactly how many cards they will sell in a price bracket...

they are NOT going to price a card at £500 knowing it will not sell... and if literally none sell they will simply reduce the price

Except that they don't really have much time to drop the price. The current high price would just put people that originally planned on upgrading to 7950 or 7970 to wait and see what Nvidia has to offer.

+1.

At £350 I would have already purchased a 7970 and at £250 I would by a 7950 upon release. Unfortunately AMD are screwing existing and potential new customers with their sky-high pricing of a card that is much cheaper to make that last gens GTX580, but only performs 20% better. I will wait for NVidia to show their cards, and will probably not by an AMD card this generation because I like shiny new things, and not cards that are 2-3 months old when comptition arrives. By the time AMD cut prices, it may be too late for many.

7950 at £250 is going to be a long wait with launch prices of £350 - 400 for the 3gig model, and gibbo saying 7970 not looking to drop under £400 any time soon. Come on invidia bring out something like a 660ti for around £200 with 580 performance. That would go some way to keeping pc gaming alive.

I figure it will be a long wait, but I am hopeful that kepler will be a significant increase over AMD's stuff and AMD will have to reduce prices. At the moment they know they're overpriced but Nvidia don't have anything to counter. As soon as they do then prices will come down. NVidia have historically been the 'safe' choice so when two cards offer similar performance people will generally go with green rather than red.

With the current amd 7900 series gpu's being £350 for the mid range card and £420 for the high end cards,
a) do you consider these good value for money ?
b) Or do you think they should be £100 cheaper ?
c) What's everyone think ?

a) Reasonable value for money. Same value as their competitors.
b) Yes, everything should be £100 cheaper!
c) Its not like this is a new thing, why all the furore all of a sudden? Its been like this for ages, you want the top end you pay the top price.

i think its way too much considering it only has a lifespan for most of 2 years.... the good thing is that in uk the second hand market is quite healthy so you can always recap some of the money when you want to upgrade

This is what I don't understand, it's always been like this.
Think people are maybe just whining because AMD have the fastest card at the moment, and are charging an Nvidia style price for it?

My 7970 is far from a damp squib, in fact it's awesome. Even with the rest of your green cronies, no amount of whining can disguise the acute butthurt you're all getting over it, pahaha :p

I have a sticky at the top of this page. Where I unlocked the fantastic 6950 at 199inc to a 6970 that bit the heels of the GTX 580 when clocked.

I dont care who makes what and bought a GTX 570 out of boredom after I had played with my 6950

The fact is @ 420+ the 7970 is not flying off the shelves...Stock, pricing, and the lack of heat and post's on this card is proof enough.

Good luck to you spending so much on a GFX card...I have the money I could buy 3 if I wanted but I aint stupid and get no stimulation of high priced cards

I much prefer to spend 199 unlock clock and play games...With a few FPS less but with a warm feeling inside I haven't been fleeced!

I find buying cheap and getting perfromance on par with top end far more stumulating...Its what overclocking is all about.

I'm waiting for sub £400 pricing before I bother, either that or wait for Keplar. Although, I'm not sure i can be bothered waiting long enough for the high end part to be released if the rumours turn out to be true!

Well i'm very happy with mine, running my 24/7 overclock I have 590/6990 dual gpu performance out of a single card. If Nvidia bring out something that beats that sort of performance, and I highly doubt they'll have that much headroom in reserve, i'll sell up and go down that route instead. I can see them being priced similarly to the 7970 launch price.
