Dell U2410 - Best for the £'s?

Hi guys, I'm looking at getting the U2412M because I'm wanting the following
-1920 x 1200p res
- IPS
- LED
- HDMI

But I'm noticing it doesn't have a HDMI. Would that matter? I have blu-ray drives so when it comes to a monitor I want one good for gaming and good for blu-ray movie playback but it's hard to decide which monitor when none seem to have all the above. Do you think I should get the U2412M anyway and it'll be fine for blu-ray playback or is really better with HDMI cables and I should be looking elsewhere?

Hi there,

You mention blu-ray playback. Would this be via a PC or a stand-alone blu ray player?

If you plan to use it with a PC then I wouldn't bother getting a HDMI to DVI cable - as you can happily use the DVI-DVI cable that comes with the monitor to hook it up to your graphics card.

If you plan to hook it up to a stand-alone blu-ray player (or PS3/Xbox 360) then I wouldn't suggest going for the U2412M - since not only does it lack a native HDMI port but it also lacks 1:1 pixel scaling - so the 1080p (1920x1080) image produced by the player/console will be stretched vertically on the 1200p (1920x1200) monitor. Instead a 16:9 monitor like the Dell U2312HM would be a better choice or a 24in 1200p monitor that does 1:1 pixel mapping like the Dell U2410.

Also... I find it interesting that LED backlight is on the list of "wants"... it causes eye strain compared to CCFL in my experience. It's popular lately due to reduced manufacturing costs & "thin-ness". Not worth it imo if using the monitor for extended periods. Works well in TVs, but not so great in monitors... due to the different viewing experiences. But it's personal preference - so just something worth considering - you may prefer it.

It would be via the PC, I have 2 blu-ray drives installed into the tower and the cyber power software to run it so it comes straight from the PC. Seems like I can stick with the monitor and not bother with the cable then which is easier then overall. I guess the DVI - DVI cable should do the trick then.

1920x1200 doesn't require dual link
Well that's what I was told  Sounds like the dual link can be used for more things though in the future.

There however is no such thing as a HDMI to DVI dual link cable. Would be quite useless.. you either use dual link for a ress higher than 1920x1200 or a Full HD 120Hz screen. HDMI can't do either.

Okay I've got the monitor now and the colours are excellent even just using the VGA cable but I'm having the odd issue, namely the DVI - DVI cable is not registering a picture :? I have it plugged into the monitor and tower (I've checked the cable and the side that shows it's meant for the monitor is in the monitor too) but so far it just comes up black and says the screen is going into power saving mode. That's if I put it in the top white port at the back of my PC but if I put it in a lower one it does something weird. I basically just get my desktop and everything else is gone so no taskbar, no icons / files etc but the picture wallpaper is there being displayed and really clear.

Use the onscreen menu to select the relevant connected port, mine was the same, took me a minute to work out it doesn't auto switch, but once saved it'll remember :)

by on-screen menu you meant the ones you access via the buttons on the screen itself? Because I did try that and switched from VGA to DVI but it didn't seem to do it correctly. I'll give it another whack in a sec.

Just letting everyone know I've got it all set up now, the DVI cable is working, no more black outs / weird desktop but no files thing. Everything is working and looks fine so thanks to everyone who helped with comments.

Glad to hear its all working for you now, what was causing the problem in the end, did you find out?

I'm about to get my 3rd monitor tomorrow, as the first had the yellow banding in the centre of the screen, and the current replacement is a lot better, but a girt big dead pixel in the bottom right corner! :(

So new one coming tomorrow morning, hopefully this one will be all ok!
