How long before needing to upgrade from SLI GTX580 at 1920x1200 ??

Everyone has different requirements so it's hard to say. If I had 580 in sli I expect it would last quite easily over two years from now, though up and coming titles like Doom 4 might change things somewhat.

DOOM 4 bloody hell, it'll be another Rage pile of rubbish, same engine, same team.

this game wont be as revolutionary as DOOM 3, or the 1st Crysis, no way, it'll just be slightly better than Rage, i wouldn't get too excited by it, because Rage flopped didn't it

give me SERIOUS SAM any day of the week

Well, Rage is in the post, so I'll pass comment when I've had a couple of hours play. ;) :)

Doom 4 will have three times the graphical richness of Rage, so it may well be one of the more demanding benchmarks in gaming but like many, I am not 100% confident atm. If they can iron out the issues then yes, it should be a worthy effort. However, it seems that quite a few people feel that although they push the technology boundaries with each release, they do tend remain stunted in the actual game design itself. At the end of the day, they produce the sort of game that they are quite happy to indulge in, and there are still quite a number of I.D. fans, myself included. *Really hope this doesn't turn out to be a mediocre release*

.

how can it be three times richer than Rage, if it's just a tuned up engine, this is virtually impossible, more like 1.5 times better... which is a hell of a lot, because this game does look beautiful already

i think what they mean is :- the maps are 3 times better looking, which isn't that hard to achieve, because all that Rage is, is yet another Fallout 3 clone !

was Crysis 2 way better than the first game or only 1.5 times better, not sure !

finally.... what framerates do you get from a single 580 playing Rage, this is quite interesting to know ??????

I have thought the same myself, because if it was three times 'better' then surely it would result in bringing the average gamer's rig to its knees - and I haven't ruled that out yet. Well, we'll see how well Carmack's words hold up. The game started in development in, iirc, May 2008 - yet we have no media at all, and we can only go by his keynote speech / quotes.

As you probably know, Rage is designed to run at 60fps on most hardware without any dips in fps at all. So whether you have a 7970, 580 or 6870, it doesn't make any difference. :)

no i didn't sorry, i lost interest when the reviews came out, i got Serious Sam instead

yes i think you'll find 3 times better is ridiculous, more likely in 4 years time, because 1.5 times better might be too much already

it's not just the PC, because the tv screen is limited to 1080p, my tv is 55'' and some parts of Crysis look quite bad on it, a large screen really does show up poor textures.

the AI/ WEAPONS/lighting/skies/explosions look great, its the buildings up close, windows, doors, bricks, flooring, nuts and bolts, chairs, cups etc, they all look bad on a big screen.... very bad indeed

now if they got that right, it would kill your pc and this is probably three times as good as Rage.... maybe

to get away from this problem, i'm reducing the tv size to 50'', i'll get a Panny.

CRYSIS on this monitor looks great, but on my monster tv it looks nothing like as good

the rumours are that DOOM 4 is on hold, because Rage flopped, and this has really shitted them up big time, but i'm not sure because this could just be Twitter garbage.

The last official comment I read said that it wasn't on hold or scrapped. A big proportion of the Rage team are now working on the project.
