Sapphire HD7970 Tri fire problems. Lock ups in games.

My problem is my system keeps locking up in Tri Fire with the cards and CPU, RAM etc all running at stock speeds. This happens in Dirt 2 and Dirt3. I know others who have problems also in BF3 and Crysis2 although I have not had problems in these games. All games run 100% well till they lock up which is why its so frustrating. This is with the latest drivers installed from the Sapphire site and the AMD 12.1 preview. and with both 1101 and 6b Bios's for the board. My 3 GTX 580 run fine in Tri SLI in this board and set up not only at stock but with the CPU at 5.125 and the Mmeory at 2333mhz +. Does any other user have these problems or a workaround????

if it were me and having problems going from nvidia to ati then i would be tempted to do a fresh windows install and start from scratch

Ok mate how did you work round it??? or did you just disable crossfire??? which I must admit I have no actually tried yet.

There were a few work arounds floating about like disabling directx 11 and running in 10 ect! allthough, I still had problems when running crossfire. I eventually just disabled crossfire and it ran fine. From what I can remember a lot of the Nvidia crowd running Sli had similar problems with this game.

I run 6990+6970 in TriFire and I run Dirt 3 like a dream and BF3... hour on hour... so I think the first thing is, uninstall ALL nVidia drivers and re-installed the 12.1's then if that doesn't work;

  • Run card 1 on it's own, is it stable? If not, could be card? if yes...
  • Run card 2 on it's own, is it stable? if yes, then card 1 is problem,
  • Run card 3 on it's own, is it stable? If YES to all these, then...
  • Run card 1 & 2 in crossfire, is it stable? If Not, run card 1 & 3, is it stable? If not run cards 2 & 3... is it stable? If not, there's a problem with crossfire full stop whether running crossfire or trifire and no point going any further? So, to me, this would point to a). Dodgy PCIE slot (doubtful, but you can switch around other cards into other slots) or dodgy driver... which is probably more like it.
This could be one of the cards not running correctly, so you need to use each one on it's own I reckon once drivers checked. However, it could be a driver problem with 7970's in trifire that these aren't supported yet? not sure how the profiles work and whether they're tired to a generation of hardware or just the game... you got CAT 3's on?

BF3 works fine mate as does Crysis 2 and all other games for me its just Dirt2 and Dirt3. I will try each card on its own though etc. I doubt its the PCI slot as my Nvidia Cards work fine in the same slots. I am more inclined to think its a driver also but I will try these workarounds. CAT3's not sure what these are???

CAT 3's are the profiles for crossfire, although they should be in older games, would be worth just installing anyway of ATi site, they can give performance boosts.

Yeah i doubt it's the slots, but at least if you try each card individually, could point to a dodgy card? Just options really, I'd go drivers first!

LOL!!! Its a good rig yeah, thanks. I have a chiller cooling the CPU too its placed in the loft so the rig is silent with the Nvidia cards which have water blocks on them and are in a seperate loop with Sythe GTS and two quad rads. No blocks yet on the 7970's so the fans are doing my head in!!!lol not as much as these lock ups though!!!

yeah 1500w strider for cards, CPU, board ram etc and 800watt Corsair for fans, pumps, Hard drives, optical drives etc,etc
