Just had a phone call off my insurers saying that they no longer offer a courtesy car to people buying a policy since the start of the year (or some other date) and that for an extra £29.95 they'd be able to guarantee one for the next 30days, regardless.
Been looking through my email bunf it states that a courtesy car will be given while my car is being repaired and that if I have an accident:
If you have an accident or need to make a claim call us immediately on 0844 543 4400 Mon - Fri (8am - 9pm), Sat (9am - 5pm), Sun (10am - 4pm)
If the damage to your car is covered under your policy and your car cannot be driven, we will arrange for one of our nationwide Approved Repairers to:
- collect your car from the accident site and deliver it to your home or your place of work within a 30 mile radius
- give you a courtesy car while your car is being repaired in our bodyshop, unless we decide your car is beyond economic repair

And under section 7 of extra cover:
4 Courtesy cars
If you have an accident or make a (non glass) claim and our Approved Repairers are authorised to do the work, you will get FREE use of a courtesy car whilst your car is being repaired. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee like for like. The courtesy car will be insured by us under your car insurance on the same terms and conditions as your own car.

So am I actually entitled to a courtesy car under their standard policy? By the way things sounded it's an extra cover that only guarantees a courtesy car for up to 30 days if the car is written off.

Anybody want to explain?

If it's in black and white (as it seems to be) they can't back out of it. Exception being if you insist on taking it somewhere that isn't an "approved bodyshop". If someone else hits you and it's their fault this doesn't even matter as you can claim directly from their insurer who will provide hire car etc

It used to be the standard courtesy car cover only covered you while your car was in for repairs. If it was written off or stolen then you didn't get it.

Even the extra cover only covers you until the claim is settled I believe.

Compared to hiring a car yourself for a couple of weeks it's a bargain. Personally I have it because I really need to have a car. I'd be annoyed if they settled my claim in a couple of days though.

Am I the only one who glazed over the thread title and wondered why the hell Huddy was posting about Scotland in Motors? :p

That looks to me like they just charged you £22.46 for no reason.

seeing as all insurance is based upon if's and but's, you hope you dont have to claim on your insurance so what ever the company charges its for no reason. same with PNCB some people have it some dont. its all bout the balance of payment to level of cover :)

It states there that he would have got a courtesy car, just not like for like, i.e. he'd most likely end up with a corsa. He would still get a car.

I have this option (although with Elephant) - I remember getting told the differences between standard and paying the extra, and as they offered it to me for only £20 extra I thought may as well. Touch wood I won't ever have to use it.

I had this call today whilst at work and said ok for the sake of the £20 but with the intention to look into what it's actually about later.

courtesy car if repairable (sp?) however not if stolen unrecovered or deemed a total loss :)

I refused to pay the £30 with Admiral but they phoned back a few days later after buying the policy and offered it to me for half the price lol
