Chaps,
Anyone have any experience with upgrading BMW SatNavs? My new 2006 E90 has a DVD based SatNav, which I'm guessing has never been updated.
I'm assuming that not only will I get new roads, but also maybe a half decent postcode entry system if I do upgrade.

Had a quick look around, and found a UK based group called BMWNavigation.co.uk, however I'm a little cautious about stuffing a disk in from someone other than BMW, as if it's a bit flakey, might be even more expensive to get BMW to reset the iDrive system than the cost for them to do it in the first place.

Any thoughts, experiences?

Even with the 2012 DVD in, it still won't do 7 digit postcode search.

Don't buy from bmwnavigation.co.uk because they are literally selling copied DVD's - it's not legit so why line their pockets when you could if you wanted do it yourself for the cost of a blank DVD?

that's not entirely true you can do 7 digit post code searching as a POI, it's longwinded but it does work :)

Oh right - I didn't know you could do that with the iDrive based nav! I've seen it on a Mk4 and it seemed more hassle than just putting the street name in :D

Yeah I had it in my e60, granted it needs an 'augmented' disc but it works just fine I just took an image of my official 2010 disc and used POIson to add the postcode POI files :)

gives you speedcamera alerts too

Ooooooo oooo ooo o ooo have you got an idiots guide I lost you at 'augmented' :p

Just at a high level, anyone know the typical cost for BMW to sell you a new disk? Does it need installation, firmware updates etc?

Its worth doing the firmware update. You just burn it to a CD, swap it for the map disc and let it run through. Then put map disc back in.

I think BMW wanted £150 or something silly for the Nav discs.

The process of upgrading for the cost of a blank disc is far more hassle than it's worth. There's a list of "approved" burners, and media, and even then, a successful copy is completely pot luck. It's far better just to get a genuine disc from the likes of ebay or similar.

Re the firmware, is there a way to find out what version you are on through the iDrive, is it the hold down 8 seconds, 3 right, 3 left, 1 right, 1 left, 1 right?

That's a load of tosh probably being created by the authors of those sites :D I've burnt countless discs from a variety of computers all work just fine, just burn them at 1x speed to go easy on the head of your dvd drive, even if you don't they still work perfectly just give the stepper motor a higher duty rate.

hidden menu is (quote)

- choose main menu i-drive
- hold controller about 15 sec and than remove
- Turn the controller at 3 clicks on the right [rotate clockwise 3 clicks]
- Turn the controller at 3 clicks on the left [rotate anti-clockwise 3 clicks]
- Turn the controller at 1 click on the right [rotate clockwise 1 click]
- Turn the controller at 1 click on the left [rotate anti-clockwise 1 click]
- Turn the controller at 1 click on the right [rotate clockwise 1 click]
- Press the controller

Cool, thanks.

The "forums" though, are littered with people moaning about failed burns and I did about 3 and none of them worked. Put the disc in and it just used to say "updating", then, restart to complete. Upon restart, it would just say, insert navigation DVD. :(

We have at least five e60's at work two m5s a 535 and some less interesting 520d (who would buy one of those :p) all of them have upgrade/update discs applied by me without issue, I use some blue base sony dvd-rws from sainsburys which work a treat, maybe I lucked in on the right disc, I certainly paid way over the odds for them :p

bear in mind too that the forums represent a small outcry, maybe there are 20 happy punters versus every one that moans about it online ;)
