Build is for a client, Win XP and Office 2003 use with internet, email and basic programs. She will be moving to Win 7 and Office 2010 this summer.

Both systems come to about £200~ and are only a few pounds off each other. No monitor, keyboard, mouse or OS required.

So what would you pick:

Samsung SH-222AB 22x DVD±RW DL & RAM SATA Optical Drive - OEM Black

Both systems will only got 1x4GB of that 8GB Ram pack (cheaper than buying 4GB twice).

Thoughs, opinions, etc....?

Hmm, they are cheap. They're both old systems, though either would do the job. I'm guessing thats the max budget? Only those drives are only 5400RPM, I'd get 7200RPM and probably something a little more upto date

IF she can save up more of a budget, around 350 - 400 would get her a very powerful upto date PC that can do all those things and last her around 2 years, but the PC's u chose can do the tasks

Budget is really £200-£230 per machine. I did think about 7200RPM and better motherboard and CPU but then I sorta thought where do you stop, and for 2 women who currently use 1.4 Celerons with 256mb RAM they'll be a big improvement.

Reliability is probably more important that out and out speed.

Providing they can both handle Win 7, Office 2010 and a few IE windows that's all I'm going for.

These PCs are expected to last 3-4 years. They currently have dog slow stuff, there is no point getting them i5's and £100 motherboards. The monitors they have are 1024*768 VGA jobbies.

Its called I couldn't be bothered to copy and paste the entire ocuk basket out as it looks a mess. I'm on a friends laptop and he doesn't have the nifty plug in.

Just to keep you happy though PI stulid - Allow me to find some hosting.

Knock off the carriage and its close to budget but I just realised no writer drive.... Edit : Changing the cpu for a celeron makes it better but still I think they are somewhat underpowered. At least with that board you have an upgrade path?

Edit 2 : Went for the 8gb 4x2gb path as you get dual channel at least :)

Thanks for the email by trust and comments people.

There is no need to plan for any sort of upgrade path. The PCs will be replaced in 3-5 years by a similiar budget build.

Looking into it now. I like the idea of an Intel chip though.

I'd go for your original intel build, with:

This ram, as it's slightly cheaper

And for people saying to get a better powersupply; you won't need it.
You'll only need a nice expensive branded one if you chuck in a graphics card.

My old machine was a [email protected], 4GB ram, some low spec nvidia geforce graphics card (basically the same as integrated) and that ran on the supplied unbranded 250w power supply for a good 3 years...

The PC is going on a network so will hardly use any space. There is no need for 160GB let alone 500gb!

How does the following look:

Intel Pentium G620 2.6GHz Socket 1155 3MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor
Black with Silver Trim Micro ATX Case - No PSU
MSI H61M-P25 (B3) Socket 1155 VGA DVI 8 Channel Audio mATX Motherboard
Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1333MHz XMS3 Memory Kit CL9 1.5V unbuffered
Samsung SH-222AB 22x DVD±RW DL & RAM SATA Optical Drive - OEM Black
Western Digital WD1600BEVT 160GB 2.5" Hard Drive SATAII 5400rpm 8MB Cache - OEM Scorpio Blue
Corsair 430W V2 CX Series PSU

This totals out at £214.50 per machine with obviously the RAM being split so each machine gets 4GB. Not from OcUK though.
