At Morrisons

Am quite tempted to pick up a ps3, have they released GT5 by now and is it any good?

Yes, and GT5 is now a budget game. For £160 for the console and £19.99 for the game bit of a steal really.

GT5 is actually a decent game, the whole its better or worse then Forza is subjective. I've played Forza 3 to death, got bored of it, played GT5 to death and erm.. Got bored of it..!!

As for the PS3 v PC debate. Oh well, always going to have these debates. But, come on.. £160 for a blu ray player and a console to play uncharted 1, 2 and 3? Now, can't argue with this..!!

If anyone is looking to buy a PS3, can't go wrong at that price even if to be used as some type of media tank.!!

Yep that is what mine is mainly for, I do use it for games but mostly online with my mates as well though. I had the old fat PS3 which died of 'YLOD', I did manage to fix it a few times but it never lasted that long afterwards, it was also noisy when reading discs.

I finally shelved it a few weeks ago deciding that I wasn't going to buy another one as I was annoyed that my first one had giving up the ghost, but at £150 I can't really not get another one. It feels good to have it back after a few weeks not having one, plus now I don't need to buy another blu ray player

Nice, even though I already have a media tank, but I wouldn't mind a blast on GT5 as there isn't really anything like it on the PC.

It's either mega realistic like Simbin, or a little too arcadey like Dirt and Grid. I find the GT series is a nice balance and also tends to have a crazy amount of cars.

If I can find one locally I may treat myself, I think I'll go for the slim version as I'll probably use it as a blu-ray player quite a bit also. :)

Finally PS3 vs PC? I enjoy them both. I quite like the idea of getting a whole system for less than the price of a graphics card however... ;) The only consoles I own are a PS1, a Dreamcast and a DS, so I'm a little behind the times.

Yeah, as far as I'm concerned, a PS3 and PC is the best combination. A few years back I would have said 360 and PC, but Sony has a much better and broader range of exclusives, plus the console exclusives such as Dark Souls. Microsoft seems to have not put a lot of focus on exclusives recently, or at least ones I'm bothered about.

Btw, I'm guessing Morrisons stores won't have any of the 98p games left?

I have been playing the new Sonic racing game on my Wii the past few weeks with friends/fam and over this weekend went to London to visit some peeps and played it on the PS3. The difference was phenomenal, so much so that I’m a few moments away from buying the slimline just so I can console game again. I've played on the PS3 many times before but never compared the same game between consoles obver an extended time like this. I do have a well specced PC for online gaming but there are a few games I’d like to play that are not on PC and at £150 it’s a no brainer really.

How flexible is the slimline at playing bluray rips etc? I have a network share where all my movies are ripped to so I’d prefer to connect that up and play off there directly.

The price tag in my local store just suggests it's a until stocks last sort of affair. Didn't mention 'this day only' or anything.

Even if it didn't play a single game, a PS3 at £150 is still a great deal for what you can do with it.

Was watching Borgen in HD on iPlayer on it last night thinking how awesome it was. Just make sure you get an official bluetooth remote.

Console game programmers design the game around the capabilities of the console it will run on whereas PC game programmers design games as they want them to look/run without the restriction of designing it for a specific hardware makeup.

Not entirely true is it, clearly games developed for the consoles are pushing the consoles to their limits because a lot of console games run with pretty low quality graphics compared to their PC counterparts and also run at fairly low frame rates sometimes intolerable frame rates.

i got one yesterday, thanks to the heads up here.

they don't come with a HDMI cable though, so you may want to pick one up at the same time.

Yes, hence why I stated a £160 price instead of £150 maybe should have mentioned this... £10 for a HDMI cable is perhaps overpriced but still if you pick one up from a supermarket expect to pay around a tenner for a HDMI lead at the same time.. PS3 without one is pretty pointless really... Unless you're are not using a HD tv??

As for blu ray rips. Problem with PS3 is they aren't too good at reading large files from external drives.... Can only read FAT32, meaing 4GB limitation. You can ftp files to the internal HD, as the sony file system and read above 4GB however PS3 can't read mkv files either. Best option is to stream from a PC via ps3mediaserver or something and then it will play just about any file, any size on your HD TV... job done, just need a good LAN connection. Wi fi for streaming anything but SD is a bit hit n miss I found.

You can also convert mkv to something else using mkv2vob if you do want to store the files on your PS3 internal HD, and you can also put 500GB + HD in a PS3 provided you pay attention to the height of the drive.... Nearly all laptop drives fit, and you can even put an SSD into one, but bit overkill that one.. Hardly any gains...

Very useful bit of media and gaming kit a PS3....

as far as i know all uk supplied ps3 and xbox 360 dont come with hdmi cables as standard, as sony and microsoft think we r still in the dark ages
