Have to be Picard then Kirk.

Can't go wrong with a bit of non-PC'ness with Kirk.

Janeway, Sisko and Archer are all complete toilet.
 
Has to be Picard for me - didn't really see Kirk in anything but the movies or the odd re-run.

Kirk would be a good second though as he was brilliant in the movies.

I wouldn't know how to rank the remaining captains - all pretty meh to be honest!

Sisko was imo the most rounded and fleshed out of the Captains, with the most development over his run.

Picard was sort of the Serious guy you could rely on when you had a problem, but suffered from preachy storylines and NG had a bad case of "reset and restart" in terms of stories (it was rare for things in one episode to have any influence on later ones most of the time).

Kirk was all too reliant on luck a lot of the time, and fairly flat in the TV series.

Janeway, stiff and basically willing sacrifice crew to keep to the rules a lot of the time.

Archer - meh


Oddly enough I prefer TOS and even Enterprise to NG.

Picard, Janeway, Sisko, Kirk........................................Archer

Really like ToS but Kirk was just way too creepy and as a Captain he was rubbish :p Still, the 'new' Kirk might well do better.
 
Picard -> Sisko/Archer -> Movie Kirk -> Janeway -> Series Kirk

Originally Archer was further down my list, but after watching Enterprise again recently, I realised that the reasons I disliked him initially were that he didn't match up with my idea of a Starfleet captain, but of course they were vastly different times and he had many different issues to deal with. It also helps his case that I'd love to be one of the first humans to venture in to deep space. :p
 
Hmmm this is a hard one for me, Slightly worrying that this is the hardest decision i have had to make all fortnight too!

first has to be Kirk, he is an iconic Captain, played his parts so well even if you discount all of TOS, his crossovers are all so character enriching and he just works, besides all his quirks and pet hates he works well.

picard is epic, his spin on whatever it is the writers had in mind is so unique and fitting you almost forget there was any other captain, that is unless you are a kirk fan.... janeway does her roll so well as the first female captain, groundbreaking and powerful she is my ideal leader in a female, voyagers story plays so well you feel comfortable with her in the chair.

Archer is a good captain, no scrap that a great captain, Enterprise is a very good trek series, so very strong in its own right and worthy of the trek name, love this show to bits and really am disappointed when trek fans dismiss it, great cast and great series only spoiled by a rushed hash of an ending.

And then there is DS9, great setting, great cast and great premise that is spoiled by a week captain, stale arc and to little to late war.
i enjoyed the series but it could have been so much more!

Seeing as this has been discussed to death in the past, we need a poll for the best second in command, or hell even the best doctor! :D
