I currently have a 2.0l TDI L&K Octavia (i.e., the fully specced old man edition) on a 56 plate. I've just changed jobs, and my trip to work will now be ~5 miles...so my mechanical sympathy says bad news for a diseasel. If I can get a keen exchange price for the TDI the move to a FSI vRS of similar age and mileage is pretty price-neutral, I think I'd just get a pokier engine and lose the heated seats. So...

+better drive
+less engine abuse
+possibly cheaper repairs (as/when)
-still a turbo
-net loss on car value
-full leather -> half leather
-lose my expensive aftermarket rear tints (for baby)
+/-another octavia

What say you? I'd prefer a NA petrol, but I think Skoda part-exchange is about the only way this will work out unless I get lucky with a private sale.

You'll get far more in a private sale than you'll ever get from a dealer - they simply need to make money on the car they're selling and retain as much as they can for yours.

Given the low miles is there any way you could cycle to work or get the bus etc at least a few days of the week and buy something altogether more interesting or even something dirt cheap like a c1 etc? (the vrs is a good car btw, it's just a thought)

Surely losing aftermarket tints is actually a good thing?

Not for baby. The level of tint is a taste thing, but the UV protection is desirable.

Baby needs to get to nursery, and I can now drop my wife at her place of work. I think it'll be cheaper to drive all in all, but more interesting cars are on my mind. I'll probably have to wait for my wife's car to die to scratch that itch though.

5 miles? TDI -> bicycle power for -£8,000!

Don't think wife + baby will fit on the back of my bike.

Will cycle come summer warmth, but not very practical for picking up shopping (and I wouldn't put money on my wife's HDi Pug in the long term).

I'm not a parent, but do kids really need UV protection?! Haven't humans lived in the sunlight for hundreds of thousands of years?

You take your wife and baby to work?

Yup, her job + baby's nursery are central Bristol, as am I (now).

First time parent = worry. Day to day I wouldn't worry too much unless the baby was very young, but longer journeys could cause significant exposure. I also have isofix and a car with a decent crash rating, which my parents never had.

two bikes (or a tandem) and a child seat tbh.

Not viable, not many responsible 'real world' (i.e., non-Londoner) adults can get by without a car...besides which, driving is enjoyable and I'm not about to give up 5+ years no claims for freezing my arse off on a bike every Winter.

I'd be going petrol. Decided my 9 mile each way commute wasn't going to be enough for my Octavia TDI so got rid of it.

There's not much else that gives you the luggage space and versatility of an Octavia for the money though. Your're looking at something Mondeo sized to beat the boot space.

I think the Octavia actually beats the Mondeo on boot space.

My previous commute was ~14 miles and I think the TDI was borderline in justification, you probably made the right decision. The Skoda dealership reckoned on 20k/annum to justify the TDI and I was ultimately only doing ~15k after conferences and what-not. Much less from here out...

Absolutely I'd do this. Perhaps not this particular deal but the idea of swapping the nasty TDI for the lovely vRS is a sound one.
