Mechanical Keyboard

Op states he wants a keyboard with cherry red keys.

why are people suggesting black widow?

the corsair boards and the Qpad are the only gaming orientated boards with reds.
I am looking at the MK85 soon myself as I want a black board with cherry reds.

my current Corsair is brilliant to type on but I just want an all black keyboard.

i used to own a black widow too btw and the reds are so much nicer for all round use.

I got the MK85 a few weeks back, it's great and responsive. Good build quality. Highly recommended!

Sorry, saw other people recommending it so thought I'd add something myself, however yes the qpad 85 looks really good, the reviews I've seen have been really poitive.

To be fair he did also state he wanted a keyboard with no media/macro keys and black, the Qpad is both red backlit and has media keys :p Granted it is technically black but the red backlighting is a pretty significant feature of the board.

The only things I can really see that fit the bill are boards like the Filcos or the actual Cherry boards but I don't think you can get a Cherry board with red switches in a UK layout.

I've been looking into mechanical keyboards over the past week or so - the general consensus seems to be that Filco is king. No flashing lights or media buttons, excellent build quality and choice of switches - should fit the ops needs.

Personally i'm looking at the Filco Ninja which is a ten-keyless compact board with front-side printed keys. I'm going for the Cherry MX Brown keys as i do a mix of coding and gaming, and also need to keep the noise down(missus happy).

The Majestouch 2 is basically the same but with the numpad and standard keys (you can get a fullsize ninja if you fancy the side-printed keys)

There's lots of thorough reviews of most of the mechanical keyboards on a forum called geekhack. Now those guys take their keyboards seriously!

... Don't you?

Clearly you do otherwise you wouldn't know Filco :D

... and this is just the beginning my friend ... soon you will be buying keycaps, tinkering with controllers (OK extreme) and looking for ClickClacks :D

Haha well no, not really.

I stumbled over the concept of mechanical keyboards by accident. I then did my usual thing: research the hell out of it for a week, find out what's best then buy it (though i haven't completed the final step yet)

I've already been looking at PBT caps and read about filco ping!

It's when you see something like below and start thinking to yourself 'now I know I don't have a second PC but I'm sure I could find a use for another Filco' that you really need to be worrying :p

If you don't want backlighting I think the best priced keyboard with reds is the QPad MK50. While it does have media keys they are just alternative functions of the f keys. It seems to fit the rest of your spec.

I think the bright yellow would hurt my eyes! This however, i could live with:

I have the full version of this. If it broke I would order another in a heartbeat. I can't go back to normal keyboards now. Couldn't recommend highly enough!:p (I may have also only had it a week so still a bit over excited by it!)

haha nice - I was going to get full size but I can't actually remember the last time I used the numpad.

Have you got the brown switches too? How are you finding them?

@inSilica what are you using as wrist rests in that picture??

One thing that's holding me back (ever so slightly) from buying is the wrist rest situation - I'm using one of these at the moment and have to say the rest is perfect:

It's a Microsoft 3000 wireless btw

I absolutely love them. They are fairly quiet which is nice, to me the tactile nature of the switch didn't jump out at me till I tried to type on a rubber dome keyboard which genuinely felt awful in comparison.

Each individual key press feels so much more precise. I haven't done massive amounts of typing on the Filco, but I do think I can type faster! ( I have an old Compaq at work with Cherry Brown switches and that gets a hammering! This actually prompted me to get the Filco as my keyboard at home was very much lacking in comparison) Gaming I find a charm too. No problems whatsoever playing BF3 or anything else. I have had a little play with a BlackWidow and while still nice, it wasn't what I wanted in a keyboard.

Update: We have established Filco are great keyboard.

I will mainly be Gaming, Coding and Using Word. If i get a filco are there any good wrist rests i could purchase?
