What does everyone think of current gpu prices

I think it's unfair for people to assume those of us who do not agree with the prices are unable to afford it etc. The way I see it is simply that Nvidia started some of the price gouging with the 3GB 580s which some people happily bought into, but AMD bring a new card that is only slightly quicker (and in some situations no better) and asks for people to pay the same premium. It worked once, but people are not stupid to fall for it again. Which is why so many people are in no rush to hand them their money this time round.
 
It works both ways though, there are those who still are handing their money over. Unfair to assume that all these people are rich idiots who have no concept of cash, buying with student loans, who have no responsiblities.

It isn't that much cash and the pricing is pretty much in-line with top end cards of the past.
I don't assume that all people who aren't buying these cards can't afford it, they simply can not justify it over what they are using now.
(Of course, there are those who just like to moan because the cards aren't £50 with 6 free games and a lifetime warranty)

I can't remember the last flagship (that was the fastest on market) card that didn't launch at a similar price. 512mb 7800GTX is where my memory of "ooh, that's mildly high" pricing started.
People are still buying the cards, not sure if AMD will really be worried... Get the money from the early adopters, drop price and get more cash from the people who weren't sure. Win.

Agreed. I think all people are saying is it is a bit cheeky of AMD to ask that much for something that is only a bit quicker. Hopefully we will see Nvidia reduce their current prices and AMD will follow suit. Otherwise if they don't, and we have to wait for Kepler to see if anything changes or not (price wise), then it might end up being worse than it is now.

I'm 34, married, house, three kids - I just bought a 7970 - real life arrived ages ago :-)

In 2003 I paid £350 for a 9800XT - that's £440 when adjusted for inflation so the same as I paid for my 7970. So, the fastest single core gfx card in 2003 costs the same as the fastest single core gfx card in 2012 when adjusted for inflation? I don't see what the big deal is over the 7970 prices.

What a load of crock. That just means they aren't doing paper launches anymore. Manufacturers ensuring retailers actually having plenty of stock on launch day is to be commended imho.


Poor people complaining about not being able to afford a luxury item makes me lol.

I allways have a max budget of £200 for a graphics card and I normally get 2 years+ out of them.

Until the next gen consoles come out, personally, I would spend the extra cost of a "top of market" GPU on a CPU instead.

Obviously, Eyefinity has been full of WIN for AMD as the additional GPU power and cost can be justified for those users.

It is quite funny though.

Can't believe Ferrari charge so much for their cars, it's absolutely disgraceful. I for one will not be buying one until the price falls more in-line with the Ford Fiesta.

I think what they are asking for the 7950 & 7970s is too much.

Thing is,if people keep buying them then of course they will just keep on charging more and more each time a new card comes out.

I think cards are becomming so powerfull these days though,Is there really any need to have the latest and greatest?

Obviously most people are disappointed the cards weren't better value, but its ot surprising the fastest is the most expensive, and with no competition AMD can charge what they want until kepler appears.

For the record, i have never said i cant afford these items, my whole point was anger at the blatant price gouging by AMD and retailers, whether you can afford the said items or not, it's not my role in life to provide easy money to these people, simply because they can get away with it.

Also, in my original post i made it quite clear my main reason for not paying £400 for a gfx card these days is simply because i dont really do much gaming anymore (maybe 3-4 hrs a week at most, the odd evening here and there)...
 
The price of the 7970 is fair, i'm not a rich Lambo owning Swindon resident with a rich gf/gf mum ;) , but I wanted/needed to upgrade, the 7970 looked stunning so I coughed up, premium product, premium price, premium performance.

Those who think the price is too high are not "poor", they probably don't upgrade to the latest top end tech in their rigs when it becomes available - I used to be like that until I started taking it more seriously. What's the point in having an OC 2600k and a low-mid range gpu atm? And vice versa? Enthusiasts rigs are always in a state of flux, i.e never stop building and working up the ladder until you have your perfect setup. This never happens, as there's always newer faster stuff around the corner, so you upgrade again. At the end of the day (you go to bed) It's a hobby, and everyone is at a different stage of it for whatever reason, just enjoy it.
