What does everyone think of current gpu prices

You missed one:-

C: £440 barely makes a scratch in your finances :p

You don't hear oil shieks moaning about the cost of Ferraris do you?

Just makes me lol at people moaning about a luxury item costing luxury prices (wonder if they have an iPhone or an iPad?).

To be honest that comes under B, you can obviously afford it but that doesn't mean you aren't being ripped off for it, and the 7970 at its current price is a ripoff!

Don't you mean the GTX 580 1.5GB and 3GB?.

Ripping people off is normally associated with charging extortionate amounts for something people have no choice to buy - like gas prices, petrol prices or refreshments at a concert etc.

Everyone who buys a 7970 knows EXACTLY what they are getting for their cash. Want the faster singhle gpu card currently on the market - buy a 7970. Don't want one, fine, don't buy one. It isn't like your computer will stop working if you don't get one.

I'm very happy with my 7970 ta :-) Nice upgrade from my 5870 (which is the longest I've owned a card for btw - 28 months )

I've had my 4890 since Jan 10 so over 2 years and had the 8800gts 320MB since Aug 07 to Jan 10 so about 2.5 years. Spent £200 on the 8800 and £150 on the 4890. Both were good enough and 4890 still packs a punch.

I've got 1440p now and need an upgrade. BUT I said i'd never spend over £300 for a gfx card and really dont like the idea of spending £450 gfx card as its always the first thing to depreciate and wont last more than 2 years.

I have the cash to buy two comfortably but really cant bring myself to spend that on the gfx card, I've happily spent over £450 on a monitor as its worth the spend and it will last a very long time.

So to answer the question prices are ridiculous and so are game prices. I'm (being highly optimistic), hoping prices go down below £390ish in next few weeks and i'll get one (the vtx3d is available for £420.37) so they are going down.

However then there is the issue that better custom designs with better thermals will be out in few months time and cheaper.

But I cant wait more than two weeks, had enough :)

GTX580 1.5GB deserved the premium price because it was the graphic king for well over a year. Sure Nvidia hasn't price dropped yet at this point, but what's AMD smoking thinking people will pay the same premium money for simliar performance after an entire year later...for a card that's not the king? 7970 might has the excuse for being overpriced as the king, but what's 7950's excuse? Right now, both GTX580 and 7950 are as overpriced as each other, and both need to slash price. Pointless to justify their prices of either card, when both cards are considered no longer/not worth the premium.

It deserved to be priced 100% extra for around 15-20% extra performance over a 6950 unlocked?. Wow. It deserved to be nowhere near that price but somehow in your mind that is fine but AMD having the crown today can't justify those kind of prices?. These cards give the GTX 580 quite a beating apart from one game that I can think of and that's BF3. If you're going to base your argument around one title then you are correct and I agree with you. It's just a shame that there is more than one game out there. Also in nearly every other title than BF3 the 7970 totally destroys the notion that the GTX 580 and 7970 are to be considered 50/50.

The 7970 IS faster, IS the fastest card by quite far when you overclock it too. If Nvidia had lowered pricing of their GTX 580s a week prior to the 9th of January then not only sales of AMD would have been slowed even further but the pricing of the 7970 would have been lowered too. So who is to blame?. AMD for not undercutting Nvidia's pricing for a much faster card?. Are you kidding me?.

If you do not overclock you have a point, if you do then your point of GTX580 and 7970 being similar sides with you in one title and since the majority wins it's plain to see the 7970 and GTX580 do NOT trade blows.

I have just read what I've wrote but I can stand by that as I would overclock the 7950. If you look at Gibbo's overclocking the 7950 was not far away from the score of the 7970 and several reviews show the exact same. The 7950 overclocked is about 3-9 ** FPS slower than the 7970 overclocked and both of them really give the GTX 580 overclocked a beating (apart from BF3).

** Game dependant

People are upset that the Cheapo brand no matter the performance has changed to not going to be Cheapo if we are faster any more.
Time scale as far as performance can be looked at and argued but when it comes to price, its irrelevant, fastest at any given time is what dictates price, unless there are more important agendas.

Yeah, AMD are still bringing us hot chocolate at night, it's just they don't have the lil' marshmallows in them any longer :(. Oh well, I still love hot chocolate :D.

What has crossed my conspiracy based brain is that Nvida and AMD sat at lunch together. The topic: Make LoadsaMoney. Nvidia started the conversation saying, "we won't slash our GTX580 pricing so then you (AMD) come in higher so we (Nvidia) can reply with Kepler at just slightly higher which we (AMD & Nvidia) can then blame inflation on. AMD replied with "Excellent" and then the two argued about paying the bill.

I admit, I don't think this at all, but you never know :p. Sorry lol, it was when you said agenda. My fingers done the rest. I do think inflation and the global economic situation either is being a factor and if not yet, it will be soon. I'm not sure how it is affecting the graphics card industry at the moment. I hope it's not gonna get worse but I think we all know it's going to :(.

LOL I meant like undercutting price even when your the better to accelerate market share, maybe AMD does not think it needs to undercut for share any more, but yes there are other possibilities like you have mentioned.

Never had marshmallows in my hot chocolate, i feel that i may have missed a great experience that i think i will make an effort to rectify.

Ahh, maybe they know something about Kepler?. Also with having the best they can charge accordingly. I would love a £300 7970 or even a 7950 but I wouldn't grudge paying what AMD want for it. I think I might treat myself to a 7950 soon as I only have 1920x1200 res.

Hahaha, maybe it's those red shades as all the marshmallows I've had from AMD over the year have been pink. All you've seen is the plate :D (Darn shades!!!).
