3D on AMD. Roundup and review.

I don't have it I don't think. I gave my copy away to a friend for Christmas lol.

I may have a *cough* version somewhere, though tbh the game didn't really do much for me.

Well its the only one I seen mentioned to be designed with AMD's 3D support.

Mostly because I do not follow such news but it may give a better user experience.

LOL whats the size of that monitor ? Do you like looking though a letter box ?
3D cant be appreciated unless its viewed on a screen between 42"-55" anything under 42" and it looks stupid. *avforums quote* and there right.

I just found some Samsung demo blu ray rips for 3D.

Had a watch of the Nascar one and I have to say it's pretty awesome.

Hmmm, that is a very tempting price to be able to have the whole kit. Worst case scenario you have a 23" monitor to add to your array for cheap, best case you have an epic 3D rig. I'm told Trine 2 is amazing in 3D, and having played it in 2D I can really see how it would be. And it wouldn't be distracting either. Try it!

Hmm I have Trine 2 ! Sodding Tridef doesn't pick up Steam games.

Good shout though, because a game like that would indeed work incredibly well in 3D. It's the sort of view that would work brilliantly, given that it's kind of like looking into a 3D box.

That same ridiculous attitude could be applied to anything. A regular monitor, a TV. You name it.

Whilst I agree, a huge great TV would be incredible I also realise that you don't sit with your face 2ft from a 50" TV.

Infact given their supposed attitude at AVF it could be said that they're dick heads because they should go out and buy a cinema with which to watch their 3D right?

That's entirely untrue. (Active) 3D on my 50" plasma can't match (Active) 3D on my 27" Asus VG278H. I can sit close enough to my 27" so that the entire screen takes up most of my field of view, and I can do the same with the 50", and I have a better experience with the 27".

would my panasonic 50 inch gt30b work withall this in games? ive tried 3d blurays and the screen on my laptop splits into 2 and then a message on the tv says switch on 3d mode and then it merges into a mess until i put on my glasses ( active shutter). will the games designed for 3d do exactly the same ? show 2 images on my screen but giveme the tv message to switch to 3d ? really want to try out crysis 2 in stereoscopic.

which is better, active or passive?

Neither is better from what I have been reading. Active has a stronger 3D image, and things pop out of the screen more it's said (well, the Nvidia demo does it seems) but yes, from what I hear you can really crank on active and providing your eyes can stand it it's supposed to be better.

However, I've also read around that passive is far more compatible. I did find a comparison the other day and it was six of one and half a dozen of the other in actual 3D terms.

The thing is, active 3D is very expensive. You need a 120hz monitor (you've already done your £165 and then some on that) then you need the Nvidia 3Dvision kit, then you need an Nvidia GPU powerful enough to run it.

I've seen it said that in order to run a game smoothly using active you need double the GPU horsepower you would running it normally in "2D".

What's nice about passive is it's at a "masses" price. As I mentioned in the write up, £165 really isn't a lot of money at all. If you were in the market for a good branded 1080p monitor then you're only paying around £40 over the odds for the 3D bit so it's pretty much "like it or leave it" at that much money.

I wasn't specifically in the market for a new monitor if I'm being honest, but I've made do with a budget Hannspree monitor for three years now (1080p 23").

If your television is passive 3D already then all you need is this.

Oh and P.S. Trine 2 is absolutely awesome :D

It pains me to say this Andy, but nice write-up :)

I really wish I could use 3D but I have funny eyes and it never works! Really I have no eyes and use that thing from Star Trek (Jordie LaForge) haha. But it is good to know ATI have something good to offer - the NV boys always pick on their 3D benefits

:)

Figured it would be. I had to play it in 2D last night and was toying with the idea of picking one of these up. I believe I'd have to upgrade my 5850 though so maybe in the future

Tbh you may be pleasantly surprised. Apparently it comes at no performance cost.

I will benchmark it some for you today and see if it differs.

I've got Nvidia 3d.

My mates running Eyefinity.

I wish I had eyefinity. >,<

3D is crap, it just shows of how square stuff is. (IMO of course.)

It wouldn't help you much any way. Firstly let me point out that I only noticed this earlier.

It seems Nvidia 3Dvision doesn't have 1up status on the lazer sight. I will try those later and report back.

And now let's get some benchmarking going shall we? I must say I was utterly shocked, disappointed and very happy at the same time.

Shocked - The rumours about performance hits are lies.

Disappointed - Why lie?

Very happy - Now I know buying a 7970 was the perfect choice.

Here we go then, first up Crysis 2. DX10, Very high across the board, 4XFSAA

crysis.jpg

Moving on, Dirt 3. Again, everything as high as it will go, fully making DX11 hay, 8XMSAA

Mafia II, everything on max, Apex Physx disabled.

Just Cause 2. Everything on max, 4XFSAA SSAO on high.

It would seem that you're going to have to start saving....
