MKV to AVI converters?

Out of curiousity, why AVI?

I usually convert my MKVs to MP4s for my PS3/Android but watch them in MKV format on my PC/TV.

On the other hand I don't know a converter, sorry.

If the MKV contents are AVI compatible then you can simply remux using AVI-Mux GUI (user manual).

If not then please tell us what is actually inside the MKV and, as Orcvader asked, why a conversion is necessary. Given that information some other suggestions can be made.

Or mp4, so i can stream some videos to my xbox, since MKV isn't supported.

Check out Freerip. Excellent software for video conversion and it's free :)

Thanks, i shall check into that.

As above, so i can stream it to my xbox So far only Avi's are working... but i guess Mp4 would as well.

I believe that ncjok is trying to save you from potentially wasting your time re-encoding :) MKV and AVI are just containers, your MKV files may just contain audio and video streams that can simply be de-multiplexed from the MKV and then re-multiplexed into AVI. There is software that will tell you what format the audio (probably just mp3) and video are encoded as, it's been a while since i've tinkered with such things so maybe someone can recommend an MKV inspection tool...

Ah right, i looked around but couldnt see anything - took me a while to find a FREE full converter as well lol :p

Because (if like me) he has a ton of Avi's and mpeg's split into their respective folders, but there's no point having a folder for one or 2 mkv's

4videosoft is what I use

or Handbrake

Although I can never seem to get the encoding settings right

It's just so i can stream to my xbox's (bedroom + living room) instead of sitting at the pc to watch somthing getting a stiff back, i can sit in comfort and chill :p

i found a converter (a little slow) but it's all good as long as it works lol.

glad you found a solution :) Re-encoding is always a grind.

I had a little look about and this may of interest to you. It suggests that you can stream MKV's to your 360. Here is a snippet:

Windows 7 users who install DivX Plus Codec Pack can also play MKV files with Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center, and stream to Windows Media Extenders (like the Xbox 360) and to UPnP devices (like the PlayStation® 3). Fortunately, you won't lose any quality when watching MKV files on your PC or through a Windows Media Center extender, like the Xbox 360.

Thanks for that

EDIT - seems like nothing can convert the entire file (hardsubs as well) :(

guess im stuck to watching things at my desk untill i can get some new gear.

sorry to hear that, I'm a bit rusty on this stuff to be honest, did you try the application that ncjok suggested in post #4? Converting video can be a messy affair, if you really want to do a lot of it I highly recommend reading up a little on the different codecs and container formats out there, then find some software to inspect your MKV's and demultiplex the audio and video stream within them. It's a good way to learn, then you can explore how to re-encode the video (if required) and remultiplex the streams into a container that the 360 will play. Once you get your head around it you can establish a good work flow with software that you are comfortable with.

Freemake is a decent free converter. Converts to and from lots of formats and will also download youtube videos.

Thanks for the feedback, i shall look into everything suggested but it looks like more hassle than its worth to get a full mkv file with hardsubs into another format :(

DAMN THE XBOX lol:D

but again, thanks for all the help.

Just an update...

i found some freeware called "any video converter" and it works a treat, apart from some hardsub issues (mainly songs and intro's) other than that its perfect for what i needed.

thanks once again for all the advice and help it is appreciated.

A bit late to the party but the one I have been using is XMedia Recode.

Free and with a fair few options to mess with, it is the one that has stayed on my hard drive whilst many others went the way of the recycle bin.

Check it out when you have a free five or so minutes. :)
