Huhne will be charged, Starmer confirms.

Starmer: "We have concluded that there is sufficient evidence to bring criminal charges against both Mr Huhne and Miss Pryce for perverting the course of justice."

Both Pryce and Huhne are to appear in court on 16 February. Huhne is now expected to leave the cabinet.

All the available evidence, including the new material, has now been carefully considered by the CPS and we have concluded that there is sufficient evidence to bring criminal charges against Mr Huhne and Ms Pryce for perverting the course of justice.
"The essence of the charges is that between March and May 2003, Mr Huhne, having allegedly committed a speeding offence, falsely informed the investigating authorities that Ms Pryce had been the driver of the vehicle in question, and she falsely accepted that she was the driver.

Mr Huhne and Ms Pryce now stand charged with criminal offences and that they each have a right to a fair trial. It is very important that nothing is said or reported

Looks like another case of Lib Dem behaviour from when no-one cared coming back to bite them in the backside.

Can't see him remaining in government.

It's madness, it's a bloomin speeding ticket :p

The amount of time and money going into this is probably more than the fine he'll actually get lol

Chris Huhne will face charges over allegations he persuaded his wife to accept speeding penalty points on his behalf.
Should Chris Huhne be removed from the cabinet on the basis of an "allegation" that he lied to the Police?

Should John Terry play for England in the summer on the basis of an "allegation" that he is a racist?

In the former case, I think that Chris Huhne should be given the opportunity spend more time with his families and in the latter case, I think that Terry is a disgrace under any circumstances and should be limited to representing the BNP.

Which obviously isn't how justice works.

He should be sacked if convicted and no of course John Terry should not play for England again. Not because he's racist, but because he's not that good anymore.

Good!

As Ian Hislop pointed out with the Leverson enquiry, the law is the law and should always be enforced, not just when it does and doesn't suit some people.

For Huhne, this was a silly mistake to make. A driving ban would hardly have destroyed his career especially if he had handled it correctly, manned up and put some spin on the situation to turn something positive out of it like doing some advance driving courses and promoting road safety etc etc.

In a televised announcement, Keir Starmer said the cabinet minister's ex-wife, Vicky Pryce, would also be prosecuted over allegations she took speeding penalty points on his behalf in 2003.
As I understand it, if it had not been for the evidence provided by Chris Huhne's betrayed wife, he would have got away with this.

It seems a wee bit harsh and vengeful to prosecute her for being a supergrass :(

To be fair it's not gone to court yet and he's not been found guilty. This case arose from comments made by his wife during a not exactly pleasant divorce. That said he'll certainly have to resign his cabinet post whilst this happens, which is a shame as I thought he was doing a good job as energy secretary.

what an idiot

speeding ticket would have at worse been a rubbish story on a slow news day
hiding it will cost him his career

As far as MP's go I though he was pretty good, oh well - is it me or do the press just keep on digging up dirt on coalition lib debs, someone doesnt like having a coaltion methinks ;)

That's not a bad conspiracy theory, that someone in Torytown is drip feeding dirt to the press. Or did you just mean that the papers don't like it?

;)

Although true, it would have put him on 12 points and an instant ban for over a year which although would have hardly been a news worthy story, it might have caused him lots of problems in his life like being unable to drive to see his mistress etc.

But still allegedly perverting the course of justice. ;)

True!

:D

He'll get a prison sentence if convicted. Several months, most likely.

Insane! Mad how the past come back and bita ya in the arse!

I lolled at this being included in a statement made publicly and covered in a 'minute-by-minute' detail by the mass media :p
