Any one else (aprt from gibbo) flashed their 7950 bios to 7970?

I haven't yet but I'm looking for the same info from anyone with the same card (Powercolor PCS+) that has had success as i don't want to be the first :p

You would think AMD blocked the bios flashing after loosing quite a bit of money from the original 6950 being flashed to a 6970... way to save money, but also, screw AMD out of some money xD

Why would they block BIOS flashing?
It doesn't add anymore cores on the 7950.

Flashing was around long before the 6950.

Makes me laugh every time I see this!

Do you really think it went out the door with a dual bios switch introduced simply by sheer coincidence, or more the fact it enabled you to almost foolproof bios flashing unlocked shaders to the card?

That's why they sold as many as they did, it was a marketing move!

Gibbo stated that the 6950 was the best selling card at OCUk between AMD/Nvidia last year, no surprise really as people flocked to buy them as they were getting something for nothing!

The 'semi-blocking' of the flashing was done at the request of unhappy AIB partners not AMD.

There would have been no Toxic or other cards that have been flashable since, they would have blocked the unlocking on every single card after the first batch was produced if that was the case!

It's all sheer speculation from what I have read about it from a whole load of different sources.

I imagine AMD were put under pressure to stop 99% of them unlocking and to make it more of a lottery so that the majority who wanted guaranteed 6970 performance went out and bought one.

I'm just pointing out that imo, they were released with the full intention of being unlockable which in turn made it a very popular card.

It's also well worth noting the 5850 didn't unlock, on an immature problematic process, while the 6950, over a year later on a far higher yielding process....... offered unlocking.

7950 unlocking would have been nice but not expected. Yields aren't "bad" on 28nm from everything I've seen, they are simply normal for a new process, lower than the process will eventually achieve. They have a decent supply of 7970's but the majority of cores coming off a wafer should be, essentially not fully working ones.

With the 6970 yields were particularly good on a mature process and so most of the 6950's were made as such for demand reasons rather than because they wouldn't work as 6970's.

THing is, its possible they do still unlock........ just that due to yields the majority of 7950's actually have no working "extra" shaders, and simply the success rate is very very low, while the 6950 unlock success rate was amazing.

It certainly made a boring generation more exciting.

Are you for real? Why buy the card if all you can do is put it down?

The 7950 and 7970 are the top two fastest single gpu cards out there, and have massive amounts of headroom Nvidia can only dream of.

I don't think you have one and just like trolling. Post a picture of your setup with 7950 or go troll somewhere else, like the Orange place you troll also.

My PCS+ 7950. Gibbo could confirm I also bought one.

I was also referring to the 6XXX series.
But for the record, this generation is turning out to be pretty boring too.
Am I a butthurt Nvidia fanboy too? Wait... That can't be it..
The only troll I see, is you. Your very immature posting style, your overly aggressive comments, it's quite sad really.

Let's see some benchmarks then?

What do benchmarks prove?
Like I say, Gibbo can confirm, I haven't got anything to prove to you.

I don't doubt you have one, but you seem to have such a downer on AMD without any weight behind your arguments, i'm actually surprised you did buy one. I only ask as you seem to be an enthusiast with water cooling etc, yet you are reluctant to run benchmarks. Anyway, I seem to of had a "discussion" with you on an "off" day, my apolgies.

I am an enthusiast, but I'm not going to run some arbitrary figures for you.
What's the point?

If you think the 79XX are super awesome powerful cards at a reasonable price, then fair enough, that's your opinion, which the majority of people disagree with.
You're the most aggressive forum member I've ever seen regarding graphics cards, you must be an absolutely lovely person in real life.
