Hi guys

I am starting a new job on 13th April so I have to hand back my present company car, which is OK because I hate it.

Anyway the new role comes with a car allowance and I can scrape together £4k to buy a new car. It really needs to be less than 5 years old. I am currently considering perhaps a Saab 9-3 or Mondeo. I spend most of my time on the motorway so comfort and reliability is important.

I am in Leicester and I need the car before the weekend for my start next Monday. Has anyone got any opinions on the Saab? Any other ideas?

All advice gratefully received.

What kind of mileage will you be doing? £4k for something < 5 years old is only going to get you a high mileage, potentially ropey car though.

[Edit] And that is for cars that are 5 years old. Will you be forced to change again next year when it is 6 years old?

probably 20-25k per year. I am currently thinking that i will run it for a year and then change again. £4k is the absolute max that I can scrape together. I know that I will need to get a high mileage car, but I was hoping that someone could advise of the better high milers to look at.

From what I have read Mondeo petrol engines seem to last. I am starting to waiver from the Saab but I think that they just look so damn good.

£4k for a 2007 or newer car?

Do you like the Kia Picanto or perhaps the Chevrolet Matiz? Because thats about as close as you'll get. You wont be getting 2007 Mondeos for £4k unless they are sheds, nicked, nicked sheds, or nicked and hidden in a shed.

Or just buy a nice £4k car, he has sufficient money to buy something reasonable. Just not if he wants a 2007 or newer.

I was under the impression that a lot of employers had a rule about the age of the car you spent the allowance on.

This is a new job and they have an un-official less than 3 year old rule. During negotiations I have asked for a dispensation to use an older car. They have said that the only real criteria they care about is that you may need to take a client somewhere so it needs to look decent.

I have been completely impetuous and whilst looking around a used car dealership have put a deposit on a PEUGEOT 407 2.0 HDi 136 Executive Tip. All leather interior and 90k miles. This should do until I can buy something better. I have had a 407 before and it had no problems until the full length glass roof broke on the motorway!
