Just managed to get myself a job for my sandwich year at uni, and I'm going to need a car!!

I've never had my own policy before and only been on my mums insurance in holiday times. She's currently with Aviva, I should get the theoretical no claims bonus as a named driver if i go back with them.
My main problem is I won't know an address for where I'm living for the job until after I need the car.

The postcode of my parents house is a very low risk, where as I'm pretty sure I'll be living in the Luton area which will be significantly higher cost. How would i know how much the cost would spike when changing the policy address to Luton? Because obviously I want the cheapest insurance for the Luton area rather than my parents area.

Then onto what car to buy? I reckon I'll have about £3k to spend. The commute will be roughly 15miles each way but then most weekends I'll be doing the 200mile return journey to Portsmouth.
I've been thinking standard Corsa/Fiesta/Punto cars but is it worth looking more at Focus' and that kind of car?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated as i really don't know where to start!!

If you plan on doing motorway driving, don't get a Corsa/Fiesta/Punto. I can tell you as a commuter from soton to Portsmouth in a Fiesta, Its not a nice place to be.

Definitely look at a Petrol focus though, cheap, reliable and an all round good car.

How old are you? i think you'll be lucky to insure one of them for for £1k if your under 25 in luton. I'd be budgeting for closer to £2k for insurance in all honesty

Good lord. £7k is their way of telling you they dont want to insure you. Is that really the cheapest you could get insured on any car? That is absolutely barmy.

I'm 20 and had my license for about 3 years. I know Luton's not the best area, but should i really expect to pay £2k?

I may be pretty clueless but im pretty sure I won't be paying £7k for insurance anytime soon!

Luton's not the greatest area, things like Corsas, Puntos etc are loaded to hell and your age and inexperience won't help either.

Something like a Focus (or similar non chav-friendly car) with a smaller engine could help you, and I'd go to someone like Admiral - they've always been great for me and I've never paid more than 3 digits for my insurance :)

I'm 21 and been driving for 2 years, 0 no claims and pay £700 TPFT on an A4 I paid £600 for. Good deal I thought, I'm with Admiral and also a student.

Go for something more unexpected and sensible. I'm 22, passed when I was 18 and shared a car with my sister for 10 months after I passed and then didn't have a car for 3 years as I was a poor student, so i have no NCB. Now that I work full time I bought a 2.0 Honda Accord in December and paid £800 for the insurance (which is still a lot of money!). I live in inner London and an area deemed high risk, but the insurance was cheaper or around the same with stuff like Civic's, Golf's etc. But the Accord is so much better and running costs were around the same so was a no brainer for me :p

But bare in mind Insurance is going to be expensive at the moment due to weather.

Go check out co-op young drivers insurance, it's the cheapest i could find by a clear mile.

1.6k for my mk IV fiesta zetec no NCB, and my first month with a full liscence.

What car if you don't mind me asking?

Em is was a MK4 golf, 1.6L (as low as they went)

I also tried 1.2 focus and it was the same

Im currently insured on my Dads Ford Kuga so hopefully they'l fall when im off R plates :)
