Desktop gaming in the next 5 years

Why is mobility (which is the primary function of a tablet or laptop) going to be a boost to a static office based environment?

Many office people aren't static and those that are don't need a x86 system. Most companies are server side.
I also haven't said desktops are dead, merely the Market will shrink.

It will contract massively, not in next 5 years.

Why do static office people need a desktop. When a pc on a USB stick or built into the screens/keyboard or whatever is far cheaper and more than powerful enough, as most things are now done server side.

This scaremongering has been in use for years now, the fact is PC gaming is doing better now than ever.

I can't understand why you think that the move from simple workstations to mobile devices will change anything in this area.

These are two different markets, gaming market will adjust in time.

Plus the "big clients" still need workstations and servers, tablets may make a guest appearance there at most.

Scaremongering?
I haven't said it's going to die out. I said it will shrink.
You don't seem to understand we are going through a big shift in computing that hasn't happened since the introduction of computings. The Market is going to change rapidly as is the technology.

Your edit doesn't support your own 'theory' on Desktop PC's.

That quote from Wiki says that if the device is used in a static location for prolonged periods it's a desktop. A laptop is a desktop if you're main use for long periods of time is with peripherals attached.

Laptops and Tablets become almost obsolete in a working static environment. You're static.

I don't see where your argument is going.

The market might well shrink in terms of home use (we have already seen a rise in laptops and tablets, as I've said), but certainly not professionally. Smaller desktops is the next step imho, not mobility.

I'm not arguing about the scale of the whole mobile technology shift in the industry, I just don't think you realise what markets are affected by it.

.

and?
have i said desktops are going to be totally wiped out? no i havent.
Even with statci offices we are going to see a switch to soc based computing. not cutting edge speed.

also you ignored the
as opposed to a mobile laptop or portable computer.
They have their own catogry use it. Desktops are not mobile computing, even if they are hooked up at a desk.

all markets will be affected, when you realise im not talking just about tablets. which ive said several times.

why have a x686 based desktop, when so much is done server side. when a company can buy a full SoC base unit for $100 or less, uses far less power saving them more and reducing co2, which gives them tax benefits.

IMO tablets will affect the entertainment industry more than any other as any serious work will still require stationary computers, PC gaming industry isn't affected by tablets in any significant way (and that's what the thread is about) and serious powerhouses will never move to tablets due to size limitations.

Tablets with attachable keyboards (like Asus Transformer?) are most likely going to replace netbooks and low power laptops but that market doesn't affect PC gaming AT ALL.

You and your bloody edits.

While the factor might be designed for mobile use, in practice if you use it in a static environment with peripherals attached, for all intended purpose it's a desktop. You've just replaced the tower with a slimmer box with a screen attached.

Longterm, desktops reduce in number, less parents have desktops, so less people are introduced to desktop gaming. in the very longterm pc gaming becomes a very niche market, far more than it currently is. Most of which will be "ports" due to the unification of windows. with the extra grunt from desktops being added on to the vanilla game which will run on all windows devices.

"Mobile" market serves a different purpose, that's why.

Won't be in effect with the new Xbox and Dx11 implementation PC games and new generation console games will be advertised back to back with PCs offering much more flexibility for general users and all the benefits of console gaming.

again, ask the public, that deffinition is not common useage and makes no sense in this debate. you know what i mean, now lets drop it.

A desktop is a static computer.

Don't blame us for your lack of understanding of what a desktop is.

A laptop and tablets are mobile devices but aren't mobile devices if they're static  they're desktops when they're static and you use peripherals for pro longed periods of time.

I agree that home computing has seen a shift towards tablets (which remain a jack of all trades) and laptops.

MY workplace had all Laptops in docking stations with Desktop monitors KB and mouse, not once were any of them undocked or taken home.

The only time that one was undocked was when it got stolen and the whole lot got replaced with tower desktops.

Just getting back on topic, Nvidia, AMD and Intel already have plans for the next 5 years or more, PowerVR will make a desktop appearance too. Many PC games are in development or planned to be released in that period, Windows 8 is focused on getting PC gamers and new Xbox gamers closer and is more of a media platform than Windows 7 is now.

PC gaming will be no worse in 5 years than it is now.

There, I said it.

Since when has what the general public thought been correct?

You were wrong about desktops. Now we can move on.
