Mondeo vs Mazda6?

I'm looking at upgrading my 04 Seat Ibiza to something more suitable shortly. I'd like a large hatchback and have a max budget of £6.5k. I drive around 10k miles per year which is a good mix of country/town/motorway. I do enjoy driving so it has to be nice to drive with adequate performance.

My current favourites are the Ford Mondeo and Mazda6, both will be around 2008 year. I prefer the styling of the Mazda but I don't know how the engine choices compare to the Ford? I'd prefer a petrol engine.

Are there any other cars I should be looking at?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Skoda octavia maybe? Passat?

Can't go wrong with a petrol mondeo, as long as its not a poverty spec repmobile thats been trashed.

Ford own Mazda so the engine choices will be much of a muchness.

From memory they do a 1.8/2.0/2.5 Petrol and a similar diesel range.

I'm sure a quick google will give you the specs and any reported problems.

I have looked at the Octavia and Passat and they don't really appeal to me.

I think the only suitable petrol engine would be the 2.0. I would consider a diesel if it's a better engine though, some of the Mazda6's 2.2 d are within my budget but they're higher mileage.

2lr petrols will be much of the same, both are good dependable cars, I've had both and would have both again, the Mazda was a little plasticy and the panels are made of tin foil but it's a refreshing alternative to the Mondeo, the newer shape 6 (mine was a 54 plate) is very modern.

I must say the Mazda diesel engine is cracking, I did find the 2ltr petrol a bit heavy pretty much the same as VAG 2ltr engine, ages to wind up and ages to run down, however this suits what they are aiming for, motorway munching.

The usual opinions stand for all though, the diesel will be more expensive to buy and maintain but cheaper on fuel where as the petrol will be dearer on fuel but cheaper to buy and maintain.
