Cost/Damage if PC never disconnected from mains?

Because of problems with Msi board recognising the ocz vertex 120gb ssd on a cold boot have decided that rather than both switching the pc off and then turning off at the mains; it would be better to leave it on at the mains as this , it appears , gets round the cold boot problem ( As I , non-science based individual , see it : the board is still receiving enough juice for it to be actively 'seeing' the ssd ; so it is never a cold boot?).

Have no wish to be :-

Using tons of leccy. Anyone got any idea what it might use ( the monitor and speakers are on the same mains leads but are, individually, switched off. No lights , that I can see are lit on the motherboard - just the one on the extension lead) - Any problems with this ?

Damaging any part of my pc - anyone aware of any problems using this approach?

Having to buy a new board:(

I never turn my mains power off as it is hooked up to 2 monitors, my server, main pc, speakers etc etc.

Never had a problem here!

5-10 watts will be the power draw of an powered down system. Some PSUs are better than others though so it may less.

Hardly ever switch mine off either. Only when I'm away or adding or removing a component and even then sometimes I don't bother. Mine doesn't even forget stuff is attached. I just don't like reaching behind the computer to find the plug.

Thanks for the advise . You have convinced me to 'run' the never disconnect from mains route.

It will be bliss not to have to start and then re-start :D

Belkin surge protector is already in situ.

:)

Think you have got the wrong end of the stick here.

Cold boot = The start-up of a computer from a powered-down, or off, state.

Makes no difference if the PC is unplugged from the mains before.
Having the PSU off and powered from the mains won't do anything to the PC hard drives.

Warm boot is just a restart.

To solve this problem you need to have the PC on 24/7 and only do warm boots. :)

The last time I used an Asus motherboard it would do a double boot after the power had been switched off. This was so that the BIOS could check some settings before booting fully.

If the PC was shut down but left connected at the mains then it didn't need to do a double boot, it 'remembed' that it had already checked the settings.

So starting a PC that hasn't had the power switched off since it was last shut down isn't a completely cold boot.

Ive never turned mine off at the mains, my router and TV is on the same extension :)

When I build mine I don't plan to turn it off either, my laptop is always on, and my old PC that i'm working on, no problems :)

I might invest in a Surge Protector when I build mine, not letting £500 go down the drain for the sake of £20

If you're system isn't storing values from a cold boot, then it might be worth changing your CMOS battery. CR2032s normally.

Thanks - Worth a try ; although given it is only the vertex it 'loses' (and thereby the boot order) and all other settings(overclock etc) are unaffected....

Moved on a little - now occasionally getting a message on the lines that windows (7- 64bit)failed to load do you wish to do a repair (recommended ) or start normally.
Have started normally upon the two occasions I've had this message and no problems but....
Makes me think that the board is still not seeing the vertex correctly. Very odd!?

Is the Vertex at the latest firmware? Utilities are available to upgrade it from OCZ. When I did mine yesterday, it was non-destructive.
