SNOW! Mummy!!!!

You would find it difficult to get proper snow tyres for most standard cars, winter tyres are pretty much just different tread and compound where as winter tyres in say Sweden have studs in them as well.

Went for a brief walk on Dartmoor today, no snow to be seen anywhere :p

Few pools of ice here and there, but no snow.

i feel this is the right place to say how im doing with my snow tyres on the front and random **** tyres on the back.. well im doing fine, havent got stuck yet and havent lost controle or felt like it was going to lose controle..

but i could try pushing it at 50mph around a roundabout? if i wanted to be a **** like they were doing on the youtube clips? who needs snow tyres all round? not me..

Well done.

You certainly confirm my fear of people driving around like plinths with ditch finders all round.

Just because you can drive with your ditchfinders does not mean it is a good idea or even safe.

Good tyres are good tyres whether they are summer or winter ones. No one is saying you have to have winter tyres or you will die, but good tyres nevertheless.

its a good idea as its saved me money and still handles well on the roads

So, in Wales this weekend, they had some pretty bad snow. I got in my E60, drove where I needed to go with nothing more than a slight twitch on a roundabout, got home and enjoyed a nice cup of tea. None of this OMGSNOWDRAMA nonsense

I'd imagine there is a fair amount of back slapping going on for those who bought winter tyres.

We had snow fall yesterday from about 3pm, pretty reasonable covering actually.

By 10AM today it was all gone.

We've had minus temperatures all week here in Gloucestershire. Best was on Thursday morning driving to work and it was minus 7 at 8am. Not bad going for the town that used to have the UK's record high temperature !

Regardless, even the ditch finders on this Zafira hire car whilst my VRS is in getting repaired have coped just fine thanks.

Heading out for a play in the snow soon. Took me over half an hour to clear the snow off my car this morning which I didn't particularly appreciate. Only drama I've had was with a truck coming the other way, the wave of slush and grit it was dragging behind it literally covered my car so now it's mostly brown, can't wait to wash it!
Seems the "Rain Tyres" aren't too bad in snow too :)

You seem rather bitter about it.

I am tbh. After seeing so many idiots on the road getting stuck, I can't help thinking they are the people that think 'it'll be alright' and go out with terrible tyres and not driving to the conditions, then blame the car when they get stuck.

better than the people who are massaging each other driving egos by proclaiming they can drive just aswell on ditch finders. The denial is incredible.

Not that I want to get involved in it, but isn't the ongoing winter tyre discussion on this forum based on winter tyres vs. premium summer/all season tyres?

EDIT: Mickie notwithstanding, just saw his post. Apart from him I don't think anyone has proclaimed ditchfinders to be better than winters.

Idiots will get stuck whether they have winter tyres or not.

I can see the benefits of winter tyres and for a couple of years now have been meaning to buy some part worns but despite taking the royal biscuit the last few years in the snow, almost inviting myself to get stuck, I've not managed it yet, be it in the Corrado, VXR, BMW, Mondeo or Focus (all cars with big wide summer tyres). That said, the Yaris on 165/60/13s or something was absolutely incredible in the snow on ditch finders.

Long story short - winter tyres aren't some magic formula that let you drive in the snow like it's a warm summers day, so those getting stuck on "normal" tyres will still end up stuck on winter tyres.

i left the back tyres alone and bought good snow tyres for the front, i have a fwd car.. i havent got stuck and i havent lost controle of the car and i wont lose controle because i dont drive fast enough in bad conditions to lose controle..

people were saying i'd probably die, wrong

I wasn't talking about forum members, just the majority of motorists in general.

Make no mistake I am not suggesting winter tyres turn you into a driving god. But in comparison to ditch finders, it is night and day.
