BMW 640D

I hate BMW Diesels, It hurts me inside every time one passes me & sounds like an old Tractor. :(
I would say if MPG is your Major consideration then you can't afford a BMW.

It doesnt really do 50mpg combined.

It also costs £60,000.

Unless you got one of those bonkers lease deals from a few weeks ago the fuel costs pale into insignificance against the savage depreciation and huge list price. If you can afford to literally chuck tens of thousands of pounds away you can afford to just pick the one with the glorious twin turbo V8 or perhaps the lovely single turbo petrol six instead.

In isolation the 640d is a deeply impressive car. I just can't see the point. This wont stop it selling like hotcakes through, as people queue up to dump £60,000 based on whether they can save a tenner a week on fuel or pay a bit less road tax.

Company car drivers excluded, of course.

Meh. I can possibly see the appeal if you're into oil burning crusiers but I think the current and last gen 6's are truly bogging in the looks department.

If I was spending that amount of cash on a BMW diesel, it wouldn't be the 6 I would look at.

Normally I would agree with you however the 6 Series is a GT car so the diesel would not bother me as much. I would never even look at a 335d.

I had a 330d go past me whilst I was walking the other week, not idling but doing 20+mph and I have to admit, sound like tractor it did not.

That's because they don't sound like tractors at all. My 330d certainly didn't (well, perhaps a bit on idle).

The 4cyls are a bit rough and ready, but the 6's are pretty smooth and have a nice grunty noise to them when shoving the throttle into the floor!

Yep the depreciation is really really bad but If I got one I would go for a CH so that would not bother me. The 530d GT arrived yesterday and its given me an itch to get into something a little more modern then the 07 car I drive now.

CH just means you are paying for the depreciation *and* some profit for the people who bought it to then hire it to you.

The only exception to this is manufacturer backed schemes often aimed at generating a nice supply of used cars - there was one on the 640d but I think it ended last week. And even then it had a sub 10k a year mileage limit. I think it was 6-8k a year? I mean who buys an enormous twin turbo diesel luxury GT to do 6k a year in?

I have a quote which is still valid for 30 days at 10k per year, 6 months down and 389 per month for 23 months + Vat. Excess of 17.5p per mile after the first 20k.

So total cost 13.5k inc vat over 2 years if I only do 20k.

It looks like I will be commuting 108 miles per day now so its starting to make sense.

Assuming 5k personal milege and 108 mile a day working commute with 4 weeks off, thats more than 30k a year.

So, £389 a month for the base 10k lease.

21k of excess mileage charges a year is £3675, taking the total monthly bill to £840 a month after VAT.

So for the duration of the lease you pay £22000, over £10k a year, and then have nothing to show for it at the end.

You don't escape depreciation, especially not doing that sort of mileage.

Once you split the deposit into the monthly calcs you are paying almost a THOUSAND QUID a month to hire a diesel BMW. A very nice diesel BMW but... a grand a month? On car hire? Seriously?

The subsidised nature of the lease does mean it'd cost less than buying it outright as it'd lose more than £20k over your ownership period, but it doesnt stop it being LOLEXPENSIVE really does it?

Which you won't as 225 days x 108 miles = almost 25k miles.

Well the idea was I would try and drive the Mondeo a couple of days a week and try and keep the total milage under 30k over the 2 years.

The other issue is that its only a 6 month contract so I have no idea how much I will travel after that.

But Its a lot of money. I will have a really good think about it before I do anything.

EDIT: its 54 Miles each way.

Agreed - the 6 cylinder diesels do have a grunty, purposeful soundtrack. The only thing they lack is the high rpm scream that a decent petrol gives, which to be fair, you only get from the M engines.

I had a play with PMK's 535d a couple of weeks back and thoroughly enjoyed it, the low end torque and power really do make things pleasant when driving around town or cruising. Performance-wise, there's very little in it between the M3 and the 535d, and mine is returning 16mpg in town v the 30+ of the diesel.

The only thing that would be missing for me is the Jekyll-and-Hyde ballistic nature and sound of the M3 once things get further up the rev range - and let's be honest, you're not going to get the from a cooking model BMW petrol.

640d, and if it's released, the M6 are the only 2 models they need in the range - and the sales will reflect this.

Why does this appeal to you instead of a bank loan and a 2nd hand car?

Just less hassle really, I would not have to worry about selling the car in 2 years and its nice to get something a little newer then the 07 car I have now.

Having said that I don't know how I would feel about such a big car.
