The Belgrano

I don't know why we had to send Prince William over there. It was only ever going to escalate tensions, despite the fact that he won't get anywhere near anything even resembling fighting.

On the other hand the Argies will be beaten down once again if they try anything, so I don't know what they think they're going to achieve with all this posturing.

Meh. It's their ship, not ours. I'd have a problem if they named it after a ship of ours they sunk.

Then let's rename our league the "HMS Conquerer Premier Division". Or just rename the national team that. The World Cup should be interesting.

The new Exocet missile, which I believe Argentina have in their arsenel is labelled a Type 45 killer. If there is another small war, it will not be easy. We can just hope Chile remains as loyal as they have been the last 30 or so years.

Personally I am amazed that the Argentine government thinks there is anything to negotiate.

I think the discovery of oil makes this all the more likely to escalate to conflict.

Perhaps if Argentina continue they will have another name for the league this time next year.

The general now a submarine or something.......

It's his turn to do his 6 week tour, the same as all other SAR aircrew.

This TBH.

Who cares if they name a team after a ship they lost.

Would you think it would be OK for them to have a problem with us naming a ship after one of our navy vessels we lost in the past?.

Given the missile range of things launched from our new type 45 you would be silly to park it on the coast, in an armed conflict i'd hope we'd identify and shoot down anything hostile before an exocet got within range to launch.

Who cares. They want to do some silly posturing then good luck to them. We'll give them another one to remember if they try it again.

We no longer have carriers. How are we going to get there?

It's more than a coincidence that the Argies are making noises now.

We don't need to, the islands are far better defended than in the 80's, we have moved on Argentina is still rocking similar gear to what they had the first time.

I was thinking about making a thread on this just the other day: if the Falklands Conflict was replayed today, how would it differ?

Admiral Sandy Woodward, the commander of the naval task force that took back the islands in 1982, warned last year that the lack of an aircraft carrier and weakening US support for British sovereignty left them close to indefensible.

They have been held by Britain since 1833 but are still claimed by Argentina, where they are known as the Malvinas, despite its defeat in the 74-day war fought between the two countries in 1982.

Tensions began rising in 2010, when London authorised oil prospecting around the islands, and have spiralled in recent weeks as Argentina’s neighbours joined the dispute.

In December, South American trading bloc Mercosur agreed to close its ports to ships flying the Falklands flag.

And during British Foreign Secretary William Hague’s first official visit to Brazil on Wednesday, his counterpart, Antonio Patriota, made clear that all Latin American nations backed Argentina’s claim.

The imminent deployment to the Falklands of Prince William, the second in line to the British throne who works as a search and rescue pilot with the Royal Air Force (RAF), is unlikely to calm the waters.

Although the RAF insists his six-week visit is a routine mission, Argentina has said it is a “provocative act”.

Better air defences on the islands, more troops based there, faster and more potent Nuclear submarines.

They'd have a lot more diffuculty landing troops, giving them air cover and supplying them than they did in 1982.

On topic, they could call it the "We hate Britain League!" for all I care.

Just reading the history of the islands and I'm a bit puzzled as to how Argentina actually thinks it has any claim to their ownership at all - except that they are geographically quite close. They've been disputed by quite a handful of countries with Britain having the most obvious an long-running claim.

To be honest, the whole Falklands claim is a joke.

I fail to see how a group of people who originated from Spain have a more valid claim over these islands than a group of people who originated from England.

If I recall corrected it was the Dutch who first built upon the Islands & it exchanged hands numerous times until we finally built a colony there.

It's as annoying as the Americans who complain about immigrants, I'd imagine the native Americans find it quite irritating.

It's something to pass the time and distract your citizens with, it's only kicking off now because it's coming up to the anniversary of the war (which let's be honest if i lost i wouldn't want to hear about) and because they know the islands have oil.

If anything does kick off down the road it's going to be interesting to see who offers help, i doubt the Americans will come running, which if true is a total outrage given the amount of wars we get involved with because of them.
