The Belgrano

According to our instructor while I was undergoing gunnery training at HMS Cambridge the Belgrano was the only surface combatant the Royal Navy was worried about. It's armour and guns meant it would've been hard to sink with missles and if in range the 15x152mm main guns would've done a lot of damage.

2. don't forget WWII where the Americans basically came to our rescue.

Had Hitler conquored Britain through Sealion he would have turned his attention to Barbarossa and captured Moscow.

Not that I'm not greatful, it was within the USA's interests to help remove the tyranny and opression in Europe. China would have fallen easily. All of sudden the USA is within a stone's throw.

I don't know why we had to send Prince William over there. It was only ever going to escalate tensions, despite the fact that he won't get anywhere near anything even resembling fighting.

surely by that logic it should ease tensions?

maybe that announcement is going to be a blockade on the falklands with his bathtub navy and rickety kites of an airforce,

afaik we have a type 45 heading to the falklands shortly and another entering active service this month that could easily be tasked in that direction. i'm sure that any threat or sabre rattling tonight will see a few more planes heading that way too. and all of a sudden the argies find themselves completely outmatched on their own doorstep. Surely they must realise that any attempt to retake the Falklands would see them have their backsides handed to them in a much harsher way than in 82.
That said this is just the sort of political situation that i could see the UK Government making the most of. People in the UK seem very keen on the idea of defending "our" 2 rocks 8000 miles from Blighty. and i'd imagine if Cameron were to come out and openly state some waffle about taking no nonesense and lopping a bit of navy and airforce hardware that direction on some sort of training exercise his popularity would rise exponentially

One of my wifes ancestors emigrated from Ireland to Argentina. Became the first woman mayor/mp or similar of Buenos Aires/Part of BA or similar.

There is a bridge dedicated to her.

True story.

Funny enough, Argentina's naval hero is a guy called William Brown, an Irishman who commanded a fleet of ships from the United Provinces (which would later become Argentina) to victory over the Spanish, securing independence. The Argentine Navy's flag ship, and a class of frigates, their most powerful ships are named after him, the Almirante Brown class.

There's also a lot of Argentinians of Welsh descent. They can keep those.

The best steak ever :)

Incorrect!

Scottish beef is the best.

Argie meat is packed with chemicals, which is partly why its so cheap.

Cant beat an Aberdeen Angus, raised in the pollution free air and ground of teh Highlands!!

OM NOM.

On the anniversay of the war, I shall be wearing some form of Union Jack clothing to show my patriotism.

WOuld be nice to burn an Argie footy shirt I must admit.

Still, they are a joke really, we should just LOL at them.

i don't know or care who has owned the islands for the longest time throughout history but we own them now and thats what matters. find it amusing that they still claim to own the falklands even after starting and losing a recent war over it .

imagine if japan suddenly decided they owned china or russia claimed finland

You are clearly only reffering to the majority of cheap rubish beef that the Agentinians export here at knock down prices. Decen Argentinian beef is the match of any in the world, much like all British beef is not a patch on decent Angus not all Argentinian beef is made equal.

The level of idiocy and hypocracy on these forums is ridiculous, some extremist burns a Union Flag and we are all in a daily mail prompted rage yet suddenly it would be nice to burn an Argentinian football shirt?

Why can't we do the right thing like our PM and Government rise above the petty insults and bickering and simply ignore them? Getting dragged down to the lowest level makes us no better than those that led us there!

I propose better, you can buy toys/models of the Belgrano, I say a mass toy Belgrano sinking, float a load into a lake and hit em with fireworks! :D

My god, show some respect....... ;)

Hey they started the war and now their naming a football league after one of the aggressor ships in memoriam? Imagine if Germany renamed their premier league the Auschwitz championship, the would be mass hysteria among the PR crew.

If they are going to be so blatantly disrespectful then I don't see why we should be. Its when you let things slide that they push how much they can get away with...
