Luckily not mine but a friends.

Obviously it's dead, can we take it into an Apple store and get a replacement? How much will it cost?

Don't try switch it on and stick it in a bag rice for a few days hopefully will come back to life.

I can't help with the replacement as I've never tried.

A family member of mine did this, she was very honest and walked into the local Apple Store and told them what happened, fully expecting a £140 bill for a replacement.

To her surprise it was replaced on the spot for free as a one off gesture of goodwill. :)

Try your luck, be polite, you've got nothing to lose.

Don't they favour over females though? A lot of people get different replies depending on their gender in cases like these...

I have no knowledge of this myself, I have only read it in places :).

But you can always try.

It's borked, was attempted to be turned on straight after.

I take it the out of warranty service fee will probably be applied for the replacement? £146.24

Man, thats some rotten luck. Did the same thing with a Nokia 5110 many years ago and it was fine, but those things were neary indestructible.

Stick it in rice or surround with silica gel bags and leave for AT LEAST two days next to your boiler (typically the driest warmest area of a property)

If after two days it works yay! If not then take it to the store :P

You can try, it'll probably be cheaper to buy a new device..

Don't think you can get a 4S for cheaper than the out of warranty replacement cost.

I would still try it in rice for a day or two. Nothing to lose before taking it in.

If it does work again though you might get problems further down the line

It's also a bit of an arse-ish thing to do, going back into a store to give the staff member something that's been dropped in a toilet without telling them.

A friend of mine did something similar with a disposable camera many years ago. It had been knocked in a toilet at a football match, been peed all over and then taken into the Developers without telling them.

Poor girl had tried her hardest to get something useable, but had to explain to him that the film was ruined. It was only then that he told her what had really happened to it, which more than offended her a little!

do iphones still have the strips of water sensitive paper inside? if so and you get it working and need some help with the phone later on in its life you may find theyll spot its had water damage and reject it.

Actually the first thing they do is check for water damage, or they did when I took mine back a month ago.

I laughed when I saw the thread title :)

Good luck with getting a replacement though, I'v heard good things from various people about their dealings with Apple so I would echo the thoughts above, just take it in to the shop and be polite and honest. If it's water damaged they will spot it anyway so don't bother trying it on.

Not obviously dead at all mate as I dropped my Desire down the bog & just took it to bits & dried it out for 3 days.
Pro tip - Keep turning the moby & bits over whilst drying them say every half day just turn it all over.

Apple will likely charge you for it..

The only way they will be able to tell its water damaged will be from the visible small water sensors located 1 in the headphone jack, and two in the comm port.

These are usually white, but when they come into contact with liquid, they turn red so are instantly visible for easy diagnostic.

Usually, when any retailer sees this, they will turn you away and or charge you for a repair regardless of your now void warranty.

However, If you want to be slightly devious.. you can purchase these little water sensors on ebay for a couple quid..

Quick google on how to get to the sensor in the headphone jack (the comm port ones are easy)... tweasers and tiny bit of glue, you can pull the old red ones off and put the new shiny white ones on.

They wont know the difference until weeks down the line when its all taken apart and there's more red ones inside.. but, by that time its too late because they've already accepted and given you a new one.

Job done :-)

Very nice, but yeah I can also confirm that they will check for this. When my home button died on the iPhone 4 , i took it in which was out of warranty and they had to do a water check. Luckily the phone was in pristine condition and was given a new phone, regardless of being out of warranty.

-Change the water sensors (Your going to get no where I would say 70% of times)
- If at first you do not succeed, try another Apple store.
-Be polite.
