Hello. I finished a BTEC national in ICT last June and im looking to do a night course. I emailed the college about funding for a night course (Networking - CISCO)as im currently in part time work / JSA I was turned down the funding as of the government cutting funding so im pretty much stuck at the bottom as training jobs are very rare. Does anyone know of any free training I may be able to get in the West Midlands/Shropshire area.

-Thanks

Hang on, you want to keep your part-time wages, collect JSA and have a free course?

Well the course is just 6 - 9 on a Wednesday night. Its called bettering your self. Im expected to just sit on JSA and thats it. No wonder no one wants to work. My part time job sucks, its just 4 - 6 hours a week. I did ask about funding in the job centre but they said it will get taken off my JSA so therefore I have no money to live off.

Why not?
It's better than the people who just sit on JSA and then get put through courses like the Door Supervisor course and get their badge paid for so they can pump a load of untrained uninterested frankly useless people into the security industry driving the rest of our wages down.

There is easily enough resources on the net to self study the CCNA for free, you'll have to pay for the exam but its not too expensive.

For real? You are complaining that he has a part time job and therefore gets less JSA than if he did nothing?

Then complain that he would like to train to get employment and get off benefits, but cant afford it and wont get funded because the funding has been stopped?

Unbelievable.

What takes the mick is I know JSA is a benefit but I work and earn £30 a week then that £30 is taken of my JSA but im not, not working. This little job is retail experience if nothing else :)

The course is £322 + exam fees. I would soon pay that back in tax once qualified, lol

As I remember there is a list of what courses are subsidisable and which aren't from my experience things like CISCO were never offered as free/subsidised courses in Newcastle/gateshead.

Be aware tho if your studies mean you can't work on X Days/times then the Jobcentre could pull your JSA unless ofc you can prove/provide that a job offer has been made pending you achieving x qualification.

Yeah I read about this bud.

I told the job centre I can work 8 - 5 anyway and the night courses don't start till 6. I have done a BTEC national ICT but there is so much paperwork we barely did any hands on and we have no experience. Im lucky I have a little bit from voluntary / work experience from previous years. My mum is a hair dresser and she feels the same with the hair dressing side of things. The BTEC national is 2 years long and most of us if not all were like "we can't just jump in to a web design job (for example) straight after the course". We have basic understanding etc but we didn't have the chance to do many practicals and when we did it was rushed and for about 15minutes long.

EDIT: I notice a lot of networking jobs require a CISCO certificate

Do you not get to keep a fiver of it still? £30 take home but only £25 taken off your JSA?

Yeah minimum is £5 from what ive been told. Although if you start earning enough to drop it to £5 then I'd be tempted to stop being on JSA just to stop being an 'unemployed' statistic.

A lot of people purposely work 15hours because your then entitled to all sorts if your on JSA. However if you do 17-18 hours your not on the JSA list therefore you have to pay your own rent/dentist etc. The women said to me some people keep it open even if it is for £1 because it entitles them to all sorts of other benefits.

Be carefull mate I once tried to do a little course at college at the same time as claiming JSA, they were'nt having any of it. They just said if I'm in any way limiting the times I can work then Im not "actively seeking work" and would be kicked off my JSA.

Exaqmple, they offer you a job but its night shifts, if you refuse it as you'd miss college then they would see that as you're unemployed by choice and stop yer JSA :(

Well it's still costing him money to get to work surely either way (bus etc) op why not get a full time job do this for a year, save up 2 grand or so from your wages and use this for courses, its what most people do, whilst looking for full time work your still getting your jsa anyway, other avenues might be to borrow the money from family etc.

I didn't have any training offered when I was unemployed (also didn't get any JSA because I had been SE prev) yet I still managed to get myself a job in IT (this is with little or no qualifications)

To be honest the best for me is probably voluntary work then by the sounds of it. I won't get paid but im not paying to be taught :) One problem with this is I won't have it on paper (certificate) but then again its all about experience now a days.

Try the OU, they have a CCNA course - I believe it used to be free if you were unemployed but these days its more likely that you'll just be eligible for a conventional student loan and maybe reduced fees.

Either way there is no barrier to you doing the course as these fees (if they exist) are paid up front and you only need to repay the loan once you're in a full time job earning above the threshold.
