Anyone Retaken a GCSE in Science.

I'm looking for a change of career at the moment but the options I'm looking at require 4-5 GCSEs at A-C including Science. Unfortunately I have 4 GCSEs (Maths/English/History/Business) but only DD in Science.

Been looking on the internet at two local colleges I thought would offer courses for this but can't find any information on cost and was also wondering if this is the best way to retake it?

I know there are places like ICS learning and UK Learning which offer courses but not sure what these are like.

Anyone else done this GCSE or others as an Adult and can offer any help?

Cheers :)

I thought from the title you actually meant there was a qualification to be had about adult life. May come in handy for some people here.

Anyway... um, carry on.

Simply put how old are you? A lot of universities / colleges make exceptions for the older you are, or atleast they used to. Think it was a "mature student", personally I think if you are an adult, then a GCSE is a waste of time and you're better off actually looking to do a qualification closer to the career you would like.

Quick googling - http://www.accesstohe.ac.uk/ < you do this then universities become more of an option, or just contact UCAS.

Failing that, look at specific qualifications such as Cisco, Microsoft etc... routes which do not require anything (not just computer related courses). Prince 2 etc... could be an option. I think you need to decide what you want to do, and would be able to do and then look at your options on how to achieve it.

On the job training / apprenticeships could be an option.

Well on of my options is for a Network Rail apprenticeship.

I do have an AVCE in ICT at A/B which is the equivalent of two A-Levels. I asked if this would substitute for Science at GCSE but it doesn't.

My other options are British Gas and EDF Energy but these require Science as well and whilst I have yet to email these companies I feel they may be the same.

I'm 25.

I went to Salford University but only completed my first year and left. I didn't make the right course choice and didn't really go for the right reasons. It's something I could go back to do but don't think I'm in a financial position at the moment to do so and not sure I will be in the next 5 years. Hence why I'm looking at other options such as an Advanced Apprenticeship scheme with either in Energy / The Rail Network / Telecommunications etc.

If these schemes need a Science in GCSE then I guess I'll have to stick it and get one. :)

you could probably just study a revision guide or youtube lessons and take the exams !

what sort of pay is a network rail apprenticeship ?

Starts around £9000 but your first year is in accomodation with all food paid for and gym etc. Then it's upto 14k and upwards. 4 year programme in all though but I want something now that can go somewhere rather than what I'm doing now. (Lab Tech in an opticians).

Why don't you try getting an apprentice abroad? If you can move around, it might be a better option

Thats not actually a bad idea at all I guess. Going for an interview would be like a miny holiday to make sure I like the place. :D

What companies would offer apprenticeships abroad though? I'll have a look but if you have any ideas that would be awesome.

Changed the title as I guess it was a bit misleading. :p

You prolly want to do an NVQ. On NVQ is worth 2 A levels. Did one in Biz Admin level 3 NVQ last year. Tutors can check up on you at your workplace at times that are convenient for you / manager. You have to do the coursework outside of office hours though ofc.

If you can't find anywhere that offers the Science GCSEs to adults, you should be able to find a Level 2 BTEC in Science which is pretty much equivalent to GCSEs. See if they accept that.

I've thought this having looked at the college courses. I'm going to look into doing A-Levels in Biology/Chemistry/Physics maybe as are better than GCSEs anyway.

There is for what I want to do though.

It's crazy that they'd be so inflexible as to require an adult to have a Science GCSE.

You know what you learn at GCSE level? You learn that mavity makes things go down, and that potassium can cause amazing lab explosions :p
