A while back the cpu fan on my Lenovo R61 thinkpad started to die and caused 'fan error' during POST. I've looked around and there are not too many sites selling spare parts (some sell just the fan, some sell it with the heatsink), so I'm hoping someone could either recommend some suitable places to get parts from that they know are trustworthy, or have a look at http://www.laptop-part.co.uk/ and let me know if they think that site is legit.

Someone must have some suggestions or experience with different laptop part stores in the UK?

From that shop

"Laptop-part.co.uk is one of the UK largest laptop parts online stores. We’re based in Hongkong of China. Our focus is on bringing you the best laptop parts from around the world at a low price, while at the same time giving you a great customer experience. We really do care about what you think (because we want you to come back to us) and therefore genuinely appreciate and value any comments you have made."

Given that they are offshore and have no contact details I wouldn't want to use them. No idea whether they are genuine or not though.

I'm still having trouble finding a trustworthy place that sells the part I need (42W2779). Does anyone here have any recommendations for laptop part shops where I can get this part?

I hate to think that I may have to just bin my thinkpad that all works perfectly fine except for the fan.

Which UK store sells it at this price?

I also just noticed (no idea why no searches showed it up) but it is also possible to order direct through IBM, but the current part status is 'within 4 weeks' which makes me think that it is possible if it takes that long they may not stock it and may never be able to get the part if they are unlucky. But at least it is more trustworthy than 99% of stores I've seen offer the part I need.

did open your laptop? usually fan block bu dust or what you can do, just spray your fan with special oil. unlikely fan is broken.

Email Lenovo, they will sell you any part you need. Don't expect it to be cheap, I was looking for a palm rest for my last netbook, they wanted 45 quid plus VAT plus shipping

I didn't try to oil the fan, but dust wise the inside of the laptop was quite clean and the small amount of dust that was on the heatsink I cleared up. Going by the sound the fan makes, I think the motor is damaged and I don't think some oil will fix it.

I just contacted Lenovo, they pointed me IBM and their EU parts store. I just placed an order with them and the expected time for them to get the part in stock is 4 to 6 weeks. I guess that is to be expected for what is an old laptop now. I just hope they can get it in stock and that they won't turn around in a month and say 'sorry, we can't get hold of the part'.

Well my new heatsing/fan has finally arrived and seems to be working nicely, It took the IBM parts website quite a while to get me the part I need, but I guess I can't blame them as the laptop is quite old now.

Now I just need to sort out the payment issue, for some reason at the time of order the funds were reserved in my bank, to be taken at dispatch. But it's now been shipped and received and they have not taken any money from me (the reserved money became unreserved during the long wait for the part). I don't want to receive warning letters for not paying at some point so I'm trying to get this resolved but it's a low process to get them to figure out what happened and how to resolve it :(
