spot the git !

I probably wouldn't have shouted like a winey bitch but I'd certainly have asked the guy what he was playing at. As long as he wasn't massive or something :o

From his blog:
So no one took much notice when a rather drunk girl collapsed in a seat for a while and then got up and drifted off, seemingly looking for a toilet. However, she had left her bags behind and never came back for them.

Once we assumed she had alighted from the train, the phone in her bag began ringing incessantly. Assuming it might be her, I eventually answered it and assured a friend of hers that she had been on the train and hopefully got off at the correct stop. I said that if she didn’t come back for her bags, I would hand them in to Guildford Station last-and-found where she could easily collect them.

So I went back to my seat

He should have brought the bag over with him tbh

Naturally, I’ve already re-played the whole thing in my head countless times, but I’m happy that I didn’t resort to physically stopping him, or kicking his bike etc. If someone was defending my lost phone, I wouldn’t want them to risk violence. But I’m kicking myself for not moving sooner or putting the bag somewhere safer. So yeah: lots of yelling, all of it ineffectual.

Placid dude, within the confines of the law.

Incidentally, his approach has proved successful in the past:

A lot of internet hard men on here. Guess you'd have all beaten the little skank up, huh?

I think he did a great job, and stayed out of any physical trouble. It's not worth it for a phone. You start something, the thief pulls a knife, what do you do then?

Yep.

To avoid being stabbed by criminals, it is always best to shout at them annoyingly and threaten to upload pictures of them onto the Internet instead.

Seriously dude, if he had a knife or something then he would have used to to take the phone of the guy recording him and remove any evidence.

The guy should have been discreet when photographing that scumbag. I can't help but think That part of him was simply trying to be the hero.

Citizens arrest may no exist in law but he could have arrested the thief.

Specifically -

Was what I was hinting at.

Citizens arrest, or "any person" arrests can be dangerous - you don't know what the other person could be concealing, or what sort of physical or mental state they might be in. You are putting yourself at risk unnecessarily.

Whilst he was on the train, it would have been a matter for the Guards and the British Transport Police. Once he stepped on to the station ground it's a matter for the British Transport Police and not the Guards (probably why the Guard actually done nothing but look and wave).

The witness should have phoned 999 whilst still on the train and asked for the British Transport Police. If the suspect then proceeded to try and get off the train at the station, that would be the correct time to perform such an arrest if he deemed necessary in order to allow time for the BTP to arrive.

I'm all for standing up for the right thing and justice - I've confronted people numerous times before, more often than not on a "night out" when fights start to break out where the police aren't present; but at that time of night, on a seemingly near-empty train, it's not a great time or place to be doing such a thing by yourself...

He deserves credit for what he did though. When 99% of the population would have stood by and done nothing at least he stood up to the criminal.

I agree he got a bit angry and the shouting was silly but in any confrontational situation you lose a bit of control.

It's very easy to look back at a situation and say this should or should have happened but much harder in the heat of the moment.

props to him but i can't have been the only one who would've laughed had the train left without him or he got back on and his laptop had been nicked!

What a dick, you could have at least taken it off him though.

I guess it's easier said than done if you weren't in the situation. could have been packing anything i guess .The fact is that bloke is a thieving scum bag and i hope he gets what he deserves. Wonder if the train had CCTV..

Anyone else think he looked off his face also?

I suppose you're right.

Of course he's right. I'd of knocked **** out of him, but I wouldn't think any less of anyone who adopted this approach. To do nothing is also valid. If you don't react well to potentially violent situations then don't get involved. At the end of the day it's a phone. You never know what's going to happen when things kick off. It's all very well people talking about "backbone", but people shouldn't be marked down for having placid and gentle natures. They're my favourite kind of people.
