Hello there, I was wondering if Motors could help my mother choose a company car, to buy in a months time. The rules from her job and her needs are slightly awkward so I'm open to suggestions.

Price: £13,000
Less than 6 months old
Less than 10k miles
Automatic (bad knee)

For work it will be visiting several sites a day so needs to be comfortable on the motorway. Unfortunately the budget puts saloons out of the equation, I'm thinking possibly a VW Jetta or BMW 1 series of some sort, but finding the one that falls in to the criteria would be a pain.

You say company car but say you're buying it? I wouldn't under any circumstances enter into a deal where I purchased my own company car, what if they give you the chop?

If its a purchase that's happening anyway and just so happens you can reclaim business mileage then I would urge you to consider how many miles you'll put on it and look at cars a few years older with the extra miles on to get a feel for what will be worth the most at the end of the day. Then just go and try each car and find owners sites for common faults.

For 13k I can't really think of much other than the ceed, i30(some cracking lease deals on just now as its being replaced) and focus. If you can get a jetta in budget its worth looking at but sell it whilst its in warranty. I wouldn't touch any 6 month old 1 series you can get in budget, will have a pathetic engine and trim level,

No, that is the budget the company allow for the car.

Insignia does look like the best bet, my mum is quite the badge snob but holds the Insignia in high regard for some reason. Its really annoying that the car has to be less than 6 months old, a Mondeo or something at £13000 would be great.

Is there no room for negotiation on the age? I'm not suggesting you should show the company a 1999 Porsche 911 for your budget, but you're quite right that a 12-18 month old mondeo or equivalent would look and be very smart.

Fabia vRS Wagon/Estate thing? No idea what they are like on the motorway though but reasonably roomy and have dsg.

How big a car does your Mum want to drive?

Ideally a saloon but the '57 Focus they gave her for the meantime is adequate. I've seen Pug 508s that fall into the criteria which look like good value, Civics might be a good shout also, she did like these when looking at them.

Unfortunately it needs to be a 61 plate car at £13000.. perhaps haggling can get something decent. I'm thinking the Pug 508 is the best choice so far.

She doesn't want a 3008 as its not her cup of tea. C5s I haven't seen any that fit the age/budget, I'm sure they would do fine though.
