are we going to be financially browbeaten into accepting black boxes?

What else can they monitor?

From what I've been told it can be hooked into the car in such a way as to tell how you're braking, indicating, etc.

Edit: Though I can't find anything like that by googling; it does all suggest it's done on GPS which could be a bit ropy

The technology is on the shelves right now now for recording of: -

Speed
Gear
Steering angle
Brake depression
ABS engagement
Lights/indicators/horn used
360 degree g-force including shock sensor
auto-dialling 999 (AND INSURERS) in the event of serious shock trigger

Be afraid.

some Insurers only offer 6K Miles a year. So if you go over that you have to pay the rest etc... You do get Bonus miles. Only good thing is your not limited of what time your driving like other insurers.

Right now im insured with Insure The Box. Got one of them Black box installed. Been with them for 6 months. I dont drive a lot. Max about 4-5K Year driving which is nothing.
So for me its ideal...
But it wont be in a years time when i will be driving a lot more and being capped on certain mileage and times of the day.

They can even ask for a sample of your breath before starting the engine.

I would happily take a black box, as long as they got rid of the points system in favour of fines.

I would rather there be a speeding tax than loss of license, just because you to 80 on the motorway at 1am doesn't mean you're a dangerous driver. (coming from someone who's never crashed, but got 6 points lol)

Our work cars do most of this, I had a quick look at the software they use quite impressive I must say.

Though our work used the excuse that its for the whole environmentaly friendly effort. Although I did see my mate get a roasting from our their boss for doing 90+ in one of them :p

I'd take one, but it needs work.

Like other systems I've seen overseas, a system that datalogs and films contantly, but only stores a few minutes of film and data prior to when a collision is detected or the driver triggers a switch, would be of significant use as I see it.

I would certainly not sign up to something that constantly delivers info via GPS, that's big brother shizzle.

It's a real favourite with prestige/high performance hire car companies.

They're installed and the hirer doesn't know - till the hirer does something silly and the hire company explain that if they don't return the vehicle within
1 hour they will call the Police. It usually gets the car back pretty quickly that one and there's never a request for a part refund either - funny that. :D

Hehe. Open up a Lambo on the M4, hit 120 and get a call immediately asking to take it back, that sort of thing?

I'd be tempted if it was significantly cheaper, although by significantly cheaper I mean cheap enough to offset a second car to run outside the commute.

Good to have to pay not to be spied on...

edit - I'd love to know if they have a lateral G to steering direction that's acceptable :D

my quotes without one £8k-20K+

with it (with co op) 1.6k.

only way i could get insurance.

only the idiots would not want one, should all be following the law anyway.

you get a rating of 1-5 on everytime you drive, with speed, cornering etc if it stays high (4/5) then every 90 days you get refunded some of your premuim
